In fact, I realized shortly after posting this that while I don't live next door to someone who speaks another language, our neighbors across the cul-de-sac do not speak English (at least, not the adults), and I have no particular complaints about them.

Yeah, my friend who clued me in was the son of a religious studies professor and a church goer (not sure how devout he was). This required a few rounds of me saying "I have seen pictures of Jesus. I'm sure he's not a lion." Now that I think about it, that may be where I learned about allegory.

The right's consistent, unwavering inability to do basic textual analysis or understanding is one of the most consistent through-lines of my lifetime. (I'm sure it has a long antecedent, it's just one of the first things I noticed as a yout.)

I very patiently explained how, in many cultures, the term "aunt" or "uncle" simply refers to close family friends, and how those "many cultures" include my own family/friends, because we have a couple of friends where our kids refer the other parents as "Aunt" or "Uncle."

It came with my PC.

Eye ran this poem threw it,

Its vary polished in it’s weigh.

My checker tolled me sew.

A checker is a bless sing,

It freeze yew lodes of thyme.

It helps me right awl stiles two reed,

And aides me when eye rime.

Each frays come posed up on my screen

Eye trussed too bee a joule.

The checker pours o’er every word

To cheque sum spelling rule.

Bee fore a veiling checker’s

Hour spelling mite decline,

And if we’re lacks oar have a laps,

We wood bee maid too wine.

Butt now bee cause my spelling

Is checked with such grate flare,

Their are know fault’s with in my cite,

Of nun eye am a wear.

Now spelling does knot phase me,

It does knot bring a tier.

My pay purrs awl due glad den

With wrapped word’s fare as hear.

To rite with care is quite a feet
