From the Nitpicker's Guide for Deep Space Nine Trekkers, published in 1996. The reviewer didn't think the state of the United States in 2024 as shown in the episode Past Tense, Part 1 was believable. Sounds like @roberthewittwolfe.bsky.social and Ira Steven Behr were pretty close....

Text from the book: "I wanna know what happens between now and A.D. 2024 to create the environment we see in this episode. Note that people are being detained against their will simply because they don’t have an ID! Apparently if you are just strolling down the street, a policeman can walk up to you and demand to see your identification, and if you don’t have it, you get hauled off and interned WITHOUT a trial for an INDETERMINATE amount of time! What happened to the Bill of Rights? Is the United States of America under martial law at this point? It would almost have to be. That would explain the fact that freedom of the press apparently has been rescinded as well.
