On August 10th, 2025 With further tests I've been diagnosed with Achalasia cardia a rare condition which is preventing free movement of food to my stomach. I began this drawing as a simple sketch to test some paper (a new batch of Fabriano Artistico 300lb). The red crest was such a treat to draw after using so many greys! I see and/or hear red-bellied woodpeckers almost every day, but it never gets boring :)

The Madagascan moon moth also known as the comet moth is native to the rain forests of Madagascar. The adult moth cannot feed and only lives for 4 to 5 days.

A macro photograph which is focusing on one blue-grey cup which is the fruiting body of a Chlorociboria Elfcup fungus, a smaller cup is forming in the foreground, slightly blurred. The main cup is tiny, less than 1cm in diameter and height that tapers down in to an almost perfect goblet shape. The upper, surface is smooth and just visible but the main focus is the underside of the cup that appears to be made up of fibres giving it a stripy felt like appearance. The surface of the wood it is growing on has the remains of sandy soil that has dried giving a buff background. Photo taken in South East UK

You see white and purple egg capsules, which are vase-shaped and are clustered together in irregular rows and firmly attached to the substrate. They contain several eggs per capsule. They have a so-called “escape hatch” which is situated centrally on top of the egg capsule - which are visible. The hoof shaped are a feature of the family. On the right top you see few snails - Gyrineums -- they are just on the same rock at low tide, and their egg cells look very different.

As artists it can feel like there's a pressure to make art faster, more generic, and marketable for a wide audience. Generating art is that idea to an extreme. I think we need to embrace niche art that has thought and care put into it. Not just for clients, but making something only for yourself.

Giant Anteater sketch study. Conservation status Vulnerable. They have a distinctive snout with a 2-foot-long tongue and no teeth, and feed almost exclusively on ants and termites.
