We've started a Covid conscious starter pack for Atlantic Canada. Right now it's very Nova Scotia heavy and I know I've missed people. Where are you NB, PEI, and NFLD? Please let me know if you'd like to be added (or removed)!

Guys they changed what the NS says about airborne transmission AGAIN. They removed the part about inhalation. Absolutely fuck this.

COVID-19 spreads from an infected person to other people through respiratory droplets or aerosols (spray). These are created when an infected person coughs, sneezes, sings, shouts, or talks. You can find more information about COVID-19 on the Nova Scotia Health website here.

This is a real problem. Last year we made infographics for NS principals, teachers, and parents about communicable diseases that must be reported to public health. Those resources are downloadable here: drive.google.com/drive/folder...
Let's stay healthy infographic for parents and guardians. It includes a list of notifiable diseases (covid, whooping cough, flu, strep a, measles, mumps, tuberculosis); why schools matter for infection control as congregate settings; and how to protect yourselves and others (stay home when sick, open the windows, air filtration, wear a well-fitted mask, and report). And a short story for @ipaccanada.bsky.social part 2:

Woke up to pee and for some reason I decided to punt this thing again and look what changed … now if only the actual healthcare system would switch to respirators and deploy HEPA and other IAQ improvements.
Screenshot of NS Health’s AI chat bot. At 10am this morning I asked it a question. Now at 2am I asked it again and got a VERY different answer. HMMM.

And, we've had healthcare workers tell us that public health and OH&S has told them that Covid does not transmit through the air. Strang has been pretty closely aligned with Bonnie Henry in BC, even referencing her in a press conference.

Why is our CMOH rejecting scientific consensus?
popns.bsky.social
So, this replicates some of the information on the province's website. Dr. Strang is a droplet devotee who has (so far) refused to acknowledge the airborne transmission of Covid. One of our members was recently told by a NS healthcare worker that OH&S and public health said it was not airborne 😭
popns.bsky.social
Yes, in this case, the chatbot is working as intended. The province has never deviated from droplet theory. I suspect our CMOH still believes if students are sitting at their desks, illness doesn't circulate.

The primary method of COVID-19 transmission is through droplets, which quickly settle on surfaces within two meters. However, airborne precautions are used during aerosol-generating medical procedures (AGMPs) to minimize the risk of transmission. More information on AGMPs can be found here. Screenshot of asking NS health AI about aerosol transmission. Tell me about aerosol transmission

Airborne transmission occurs when airborne particles remain suspended in the air, travel on air currents, and are inhaled by others nearby or some distance away from the source. Control of airborne transmission requires control of airflow through special ventilation systems and the use of respiratory protection.

Does breathing generate aerosols?
•Nova
Wednesday, 10:03 a.m.
While normal breathing does produce some droplets, activities like talking, screaming, coughing, or sneezing produce larger droplets.
Labour and delivery are also not considered aerosolized events. Aerosol Generating Medical Procedures (AGMPs) are specific medical procedures that generate aerosols. The AI claimed that breathing generates fewer aerosols than AGMPs so I tried asking for more info. How many aerosols are generated by breathing compared to an AGMP?

To best answer your question, could you clarify what context you're interested in? For example, are you concerned about a specific medical setting or a particular activity? #NSPoli

It also draws attention to Nova Scotia's refusal to recognize the well-documented reality that Covid, like many other pathogens, is transmitted through the air. The CMOH has clung to an incorrect droplet theory, which harms Nova Scotians and is an unecessary barrier to creating safe environments.
popns.bsky.social
This is the Nova Scotia Government's health care "fix." It's irresponsible, and demonstrates a complete disregard for Nova Scotians and their health.

Last week, the UK Covid Inquiry showed children weren’t seen as a priority to protect. The toll is heartbreaking - lives lost, health harmed, futures changed. Yet SARS-2 is just one of many airborne hazards children face in schools.

The Covid vaccine rollout across Canada, but especially in Nova Scotia, is about administrative ease, not infection control, population health, or public health. We know there's an annual wave around September, yet nothing changes. Another year of failure.
