And really, TBH, I wonder sometimes why games with similar settings seem to get passed over too. Sure, there's some work to do to scrub the racism from the concept, but it's not super hard. Yet we still seem to skip mythological Bronze Age fun.

Atlantis: The Second Age is one of my white whale #TTRPG goals. I've owned the books forever. Me and my friends have read through them. But somehow, SOMEHOW, we've generally failed to actually play a game of it. It's bizarre. It hits all those weird fantasy/mythology/Bronze Age sweet spots...1/2

Usually, yes. What I'm seeing a lot of lately though is deeper. Like a weird nostalgia rush from the Gen X and Millennial cohorts that's less about care free childhood and more that "everything" was "simpler" at all levels.

2/2 When I look at the 90s and 00s, I don't see a time when things were easier. I see a time when it took a different set of skills to achieve the same ends. That and a lot of survivor bias.

"Things were simpler back in the day..." is a phrase I've come to really dislike. Because it's patently untrue. Things were just complex in different ways. A lot of things were way more difficult. And barriers? Barriers were worse because the prevailing culture was more supportive of them. 1/2

This. Time, effort, and a number of other factors all go into the pricing systems used by creators. Consumers generally only ever see the final product, not the hours and effort that goes into it. This is extra true of electronic content. An ebook or pdf is still a significant creative investment.

People get mad my ebooks are $2.99!

“It’s not *real*,” they say, like it didn’t take me at least a year to write.

People get mad my paperback books are $15, like it didn’t take me that time to write, someone to make the paper, print the books, pack and ship.

The huge numonopolistic corporations destroying lives to bring bad products at seemingly low prices has really fucked our perception of what it costs to run a business. Remember if you think something is affordable it's highly likely multiple people in the chain are being heavily exploited & harmed

I do not believe so. I do use Canva to make the headers though, and the artist contributions are both original and AI made/augmented art. I try to avoid the latter ones. If the base image (before I added the dragon silhouettes) is AI, it's not an intentional use.

Sometimes the AI adds in some bone lengthening or shortening surgery too. Because why not? It's all told in absolutely deadpan too.

AI stories have discovered human growth hormone, steroids, and body horror at the same time. The result? Stories where one character (either the father or brother) ends up injecting themselves with "more than a human can take" then spontaneously mutating Resident Evil style. You know, like...1/2

I loved Tron as a kid. Tron: Legacy was the first movie in theatres that my missus and I went to when we were starting to date. I was initially excited about Tron: Ares, but everything I'm seeing about it right now? It's like the writers and creators hated Tron but loved the aesthetic.
