One thing that's irritating about the whole "Bright deadbeat dad" thing is that it obfuscates the far more interesting discussion of one of the themes of UC gundam, that is being a "important" and "great man" requires you to give up your human relationships
physicalbadger.bsky.social
You are in the tiny minority there, having that opinion. How do you square that with how people *treat* jury duty? Plus how the system implements jury duty (where even when called up, it is a strike against you to be honest and have any awareness of the world around you)?

The establishment candidate of course lost the general. Maybe this is just how American politics is and it's better elsewhere... but I doubt it given that my only other points of reference seem as bad or worse.

I just don't know how to fix this problem. How to get people to care at all.
physicalbadger.bsky.social
Something dismally low anyway, maybe I'm exaggerating in my mind. Another time I was supporting a grassroots primary candidate at a union meeting, and teachers who were active union members sneered and condescended to us about how our candidate was not the right one for the moment
physicalbadger.bsky.social
The experience I cite constantly is canvassing for a city council by-election for a candidate that I truly believed in, and getting shouted at and the door shut in my face and all sorts of hostile reactions from people for merely informing them there was an election! IIRC final turnout was 13%
physicalbadger.bsky.social
I've also become somewhat disillusioned by the sheer amount that people Do Not Care about elections that will affect their lives personally. First-past-the-post and geography have made most of my high level votes meaningless, but for local office it's different... and yet people can't be bothered.
physicalbadger.bsky.social
Having gotten jury duty but not serving on the jury... hard to reconcile this with how much people Do Not Want To Be There and also how I got struck twice during selection because I dared to be honest about my biases instead of giving stock answers.

Narrow, disconnected, door-zone bike lanes aren't good enough.
lauragmitchell.com
If you don’t frequently see families with kids traveling to destinations by bike, your bike network isn’t safe enough (&/or your zoning forces sprawl & car dependency).

Indiana University fires IDS
adviser amid push to control
student newspaper's content The director of student media at Indiana University was fired amidst a dispute between university leadership and editors at the Indiana Daily Student over what content gets printed in the student newspaper.

As director of student media, Jim Rodenbush did not directly oversee or have any say over the content published in the IDS, per a charter between the IDS and the university. But he told IndyStar his firing follows a series of meetings with IU Media School leadership in which it grew increasingly apparent they were expecting him to officially prohibit students from publishing news.

Another amazing illustration by @caraid.bsky.social. Look at those colors! The buffalo's name is Lune, and you'll meet her VERY SOON, because Feral Flame will release NOVEMBER 11!

Cover for Feral Flame - Book Four of the Noss Saga, by Joaquín Baldwin. A one-horned buffalo holds her hands forward to control a green flame shaped like a running wolf. Her brown fur is draped with long white fabrics that flow in the wind and blend into the pink mist behind her. Her horn is decorated with golden caps and rings, her nose and ears pierced. Her green eyes stare directly at the viewer.

one response to this (correct) observation is to say “well, the cops will attack you no matter how you dress and behave.” that’s right. images of cops and ICE beating grandmas and kids in inflatable frog costumes is a win for the opposition.

one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--

MAGA Rage at “No Kings” Boils Over—and It Quickly Backfires on Trump
As Trump allies smear the coming protests, a good writer on MAGA skewers the absurdity of these attacks on large swaths of Americans—and explains why our best recourse will be to turn out in force.
