Meh. I’d do it happily at the current salary. It seems pretty interesting.
I wouldn't be Chancellor for all the money in the world. Incredibly tough job. Impossible ask. Especially over the last decade.

This looks like an important study.
"We find a strong association between higher population loss and AfD support [in three east German states]... the AfD is the only party that gains electorally from long-term loss of population."
Would be curious to see if/how relationship holds in west Germany.

What are the political consequences of long-term population loss? In a new paper for German Politics @benjaminhoehne.bsky.social, Hendrik Träger and I find that East German places more affected by depopulation provided stronger support for the AfD in recent state elections.🧵👇

That the Greens are basically the only major party in Germany standing for sound fiscal management (in the way we understand the term internationally) is clearly a surprise to many, and very difficult to accept for some, but it shouldn't be.

Es liest sich eigentlich als eine ganz hervorragende Orientierung, falls man mal was für einen guten Zweck spenden will.
Ich muss es so hart sagen: ich dachte, ich lese eine kleine Anfrage der AfD, aber sie stammt von der Union.
551 (!) Fragen zu Organisationen, Hintergrund seien „Proteste gegen die CDU“, darunter die „Omas gegen Rechts“ und andere.

This is a very good thread that should not have been necessary at all. Governments, if you believe your own analysis of the value of (much) aid spending, it makes zero sense to make wholesale cuts. And if there's some secret discount rate to the benefit of aid, I'd love to see it.
Cutting aid to increase spending on defence is a false economy and suggests a deep mis-understanding of global politics.
In a world of intensifying geopolitical competition, aid cuts render Western powers less powerful, credible and safe.

Quite the marmalade-dropper, this: 3 weeks before Germany's election, Angela Merkel has issued a statement criticising her own party for enabling ("with open eyes") a majority with the AfD. Effectively accuses Merz of breaking his pledge not to do so.

Was man heute im Kopf behalten muss: Es gab für die CDU und Friedrich Merz keine Notwendigkeit, so kurz vor der Wahl Anträge zur Migrationspolitik einzubringen und das erste Mal zu sagen, man nehme auch Stimmen von der extremen Rechten. Das war eine politische Entscheidung.

Christopher was a towering figure and I’ve only ever known him to be kind, curious, and very funny. He will be terribly missed.
