In a way Trek needs another Dominion type threat, or, mirroring real world events, a Trumplike politician taking control of the Federation and pushing it toward authoritarianism (nearly becoming like its mirror universe self).

...especially with thier shapeshifter abilities and the who do you trust paranoia. Trek had some of its best episodes during DS9/Dominion War, especially when Starfleet was pushed to do things thar went against everything the Federation was about.

Sadly new Trek (post-TNG) has a habit of neutering its bad guys. Borg became watered down during Voyagers run. Romulans are now just twirly mustached cartoon villains. Klingons have lost thier edge since DS9 (peak Klingon).

The only decent "bad guys" really have been the Dominion...1/2

Shaftesbury is on a hill that overlooks an area called the Blackmore Vale to the north. Shaftesbury in situated on the Cranborne Chase, a chalk formation that runs through Dorset, Wiltshire and Hampshire. Win Green Hill, close by, is the highest point between the coast & Shaftesbury.

My exposure to SF in my early teens was limited to TV (Star Trek, Dr Who, Blakes Seven, UFO, Captain Scarlet etc) and comics (2000AD, Marvel). I mainly read fantasy ( Robert E Howard, Tolkien).

Prose SF for me started with the Jerry Pournelle & Larry Niven books.

Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset was made famous in the 1973 advert for Hovis bread. The advert was directed by a young Ridley Scott.
