Hey all, I'm officially turning my focus towards freelance editing, writing, and creative consulting.

If you need help with your project be it comic, webcomic, prose, TTRPG, or even videogame -- I have the tools needed to help you make it better.

Let's make some awesome stuff together!

Today I was laid off from Dark Horse Comics. While devastating news, I'm so proud of what I helped make there and am grateful to have worked alongside such amazing coworkers and creators.

I'm not quitting comics yet, so if you or someone you know needs a savvy editor please reach out.

Fellow creators who use Kickstarter, consider supporting the Kickstarter Workers Union in their strike. They're not asking you to boycott Kickstarter but there are other ways to show your support for meeting the workers demands.

Kickstarter workers are on strike to protect their 32-hour, 4-day workweek and obtain a living wage for all workers. IGDN stands in solidarity with them. The union has not called for a boycott, but here is what you can do to help.

[3/5] Most storytelling we do in our daily lives is of this second kind, and I'd argue that most TTRPGs – certainly nearly all "trad" RPGs – are likewise oriented toward this kind of story. The rules are *weird shit generators*, and interpreting the outputs of the rules is what *produces the story*.

My hot take is that none of these are structure. These are all recipes that describe structure.

Structure is the Salt, Fat, Acid Heat of writing.

3-Act/Hero's Journey etc are recipes.

You can make great meals without using a recipe if you understand the principles of structure.

So #WritingCommunity how do we feel about structure?

Do you use the 3 act structure? The 5 act?

Hero's Journey? Save the Cat? Super Structure Method? Story Genius Method?

Something else?

What have you got?

What you're getting from an LLM is a statistical approximation of what the answer would be to a statistical approximation of the question.

This is why prompt engineering is fake. The prompt (and any input data) is just a suggestion - and helps fool you into thinking that your question was answered.

Just like consistently bringing him close to his dreams and giving him the chance to be a better person, each time punishing him worse. I'm sure the luck god kinda tries to be a little kinder to the Gallagher kids but the grudge against Frank is so great that karmic justice against him trumps all.

Slowly doing a Shameless (U.S.) rewatch and am becoming increasingly convinced of my theory that Frank Gallagher once met a demon/god of luck and somehow outwit them in a drinking game(not that he remembers) and so now he can't ever die but has circular/ironic bad luck so bad it hits his kids too.

Day 12: Denys Cowan

Hardware #1. I love this cover because it tells you so much. Curtis is so angry, so burning for revenge, that he goes into battle in unfinished armor with components duct taped to his chest plate.
Portrait of Hardware standing in front of a complex machine by Dennis Cowan. Hardware #1 cover art without text or indica.

We are all in danger

I wish I had something more hopeful to say... The level of catastrophic incompetence that is running all of our important agencies right now... It feels like a cascade of disasters is imminent.

Trump: "Portland, I mean -- every time I look at that place it's burning down. There are fires all over the place. When a store -- there are very few of them left -- but when a store owner rebuilds a store they build it out of plywood. They don't put up storefronts anymore. They just put wood up."

AI freaks literally forcing their plagiarism slop machines down our throats. They know most people don't like their garbage machines so they have to force their slop onto us.

This is about what I say every time someone asks me about it. Creative people know this "tool" actually slows their process down and makes things worse. Consumers don't want it.

The only people pushing it are the grifters selling it and the people who want acclaim/popularity without skill/effort.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.
