Yesterday, instead of the traditional holiday feast, we drove 1.5 hours north to Banning State Park where 6-8" of snow had been reported in the storm 2 days ago. Our first snow adventure of the season. (Hopefully not the last!)

Driving north to deeper snow. Jeff's at the wheel, and Tonttu looks over his shoulder from the back seat, icy blue eyes intently focused on the road ahead. A dashboard stuffed moose mascot with blue antlers watches the two-lane park entrance road ahead. Deciduous trees are plastered white from wind driven snow a couple days before, and the road is snow covered but plowed. Two huskies, Zeena and Tottu, pause at the trail head, looking down a snowy trail with scattered foot tracks. Sticky snow covers the branches of deciduous trees and shrubs, drooping down over the trail. No ski tracks can be seen. Looking back towards Jeff, who's following the trail of the photographer and his two huskies. The scene is mostly white, with hints of dark tree trunks visible through the snow, and a touch of blue sky above.

There’s a group of 5 Corbetts just north of Tyndrum, Moray and I did most of them earlier in the year but missed out Beinn Odhar as it was just too hot. So we went back yesterday to do it, straight up and down from the A82.

It's finally happening!

Ugh. Re-reading this, and finding that my words were all over the place! I'm going to blame Bsky's limited word count for forcing shortcuts. Hopefully you all got the general gist of what I was trying to say. 😅

Finally back to #TrailRunning/#CaniX with the #Huskies! We all really enjoy it, but all the running injuries I've had were off paved paths. The last was a bad ankle roll last spring that kept me from running until the heat & fire smoke of summer kept all of us from wanting to exercise outdoors...

First ski day officially on the books! High risk-high reward: a lot of driving when coupled with yesterday’s hime, but this was my first time on skis before Thanksgiving EVER. It was a rocky one but we had a blast!

That’s a wrap on the Glastenbury Residency. On our last lap today, we ended up turning around at the top of Maple Hill, mile 2.0. The decision was a mix of tough conditions and Wylie being somewhat under the weather. Last week was our last summit, we just didnt know it yet.

A perfect moment: milkweed pods opening, seed tufts glowing in the sunlight. Occasionally the breeze lifts one gently into the air to twirl & dance away.

I stopped to capture the tranquil scene on video.

Tonttu was not content to wait for the wind to work its magic.

THIS is why you should talk to your dogs, even if you think they don't understand you! 😁

We sometimes let our dogs choose the direction at trail intersections when we don't have a specific route in mind. Zeena in particular seems to perk up when we say "Zeena, which way?" and she gets to choose.

Yesterday we drove down to Nerstrand State Park for a change of scenery. For all the cars in the parking lot, the falls were surprisingly empty! We had the place to ourselves, with the exception of a lone person quietly sketching the scene off to the side […]

Husky Zeena stands on the edge of a waterfall, looking out over the water below. The falls are a wide straight shelf of rock with a straight vertical drop to a pool below. With water levels low, there are only a couple of spots where water cascades over. The hardwood forest on the other side is largely bare of leaves, which have collected on the edge of the stream and pond in a reddish-brown carpet. A hint of green moss covers the shady face of the falls cliff at the near end. Hikers Jeff and Tonttu approach the pool below the falls in the first photo from below. We're still looking at the falls edge-on, seeing more of the large rectangular slab of rock over which the water tumbles, in a couple of veil-like cascades. Zeena has now descended to the bottom of the falls too. She's sniffing under a bit of rocky overhang, which glistens with a thin sheet of water flowing over it, which then breaks apart into a series of streams to the sandy pool below. A larger bit of veil-like cascade falls onto a low stone behind her.

An overly busy week at work has kept me from posting, but we did get out for a couple of nice hikes as fall colors continue their transition to winter austerity.

Here's Tonttu investigating something in the tall Bluegrass prairie at the north end of Afton State Park.

Enjoying a slow, lazy start to our Saturday.

Tonttu, a large wolfish husky lies on a human bed with early morning light coming in from the right. His head is lifted slightly, enough for his jaw to open wide in a big yawn, with his tongue spilling out like a big pink playground slide. The sunlight passes through Venetian blinds, making a bold diagonal striped pattern across the dog, bed and wooden headboard behind, which intersect the light in narrow vertical slats.

Kaltag, a tan and brown chinook husky dog (as seen in the movie Balto) begs for treats at a doorstep. He holds a bag bearing his name. The drop bag is from an Iditarod race, a musher team sends these ahead for resupplying, this one for the town of Kaltag Alaska. Kaltag begging on the patio. His bag is empty! Kaltag holding out his bag for you! Treats plz? Okay Kaltag is just playing with the bag now, over his head!
