Whoever came up with the idea of mocking this gratuitously cruel regime with cute, nonthreatening plastic frogs really hit a gold mine. The clever imagery has made it all the way across the Atlantic.

It's touch and go between Newman and early 80s Harrison Ford in his Raiders/Empire pomp
The prospect of ad-free episodes is precisely what puts me off joining the Rest is History club. Listening to Dominic and Tom chewing their way through the touchy-feely language and tenuous links in the Better Health ads and more is one of the true joys of the podcast.
Wilf seeming to be genuinely happy to *not* win the money right at the end - and not be rewarded for his guilt-drenched treachery - was what made that S1 ending so utterly perfect. Whereas the end of S2 with Harry lying and winning was basically the end of Empire Strikes Back. Amazing but awful.

Still find it wild how they shut down USAID with no Congressional approval
would love to know where vought got the authority to shutdown a government agency established by statute

The old Saudi brand was “austere theocracy,” but the new one is “fun, fun, fun, but still with beheading.” - brilliant piece with so many laugh out loud moments:
"Sometimes you have to ask yourself: How did I get here—sitting in Saudi Arabia, listening to Louis C.K. do jokes about Barely Legal magazine?"

I went to Riyadh to see the transformation of a country with the world's biggest cultural chequebook. Gift link:

Your poor dog. This is precisely why I keep our entirely delightful, utterly unpredictable, former rescue hound in a harness and on the lead at all times. 80% of the time, he behaves 100% of the time.

I think I’m slightly in love.
It’s the 111th anniversary today of the birth of Harry Rée, who was a teacher and conscientious objector when the Second World War broke out, and by the time it ended, when he was 31, had invented ‘blackmail sabotage’ and got a DSO, an OBE, a Croix de Guerre, and a Medaille de la Resistance
Someone needs to call Timmy Chalamet's agent and order a spec script pronto.

The absolute state of the daily sucking up that The Times does on behalf of its Murdoch owners is astonishing. Here it is citing completely groundless 'unrest' in American cities.
The call-handling on the Octopus Energy hotline just put me on hold with the words "here's a song I hope you like", like he's Gilles Peterson working a day job to pay the bills.
This is a brilliant, fascinating read
Because it’s back on the telly, here’s the piece I wrote about how The Traitors is edited, and what it tells us about storytelling.

Portland continues to amaze me 👏
The cruelty is the point
After spending 43 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, evidence hidden by the prosecution reversed his conviction. Rather than finally enjoying freedom, ICE abducted him for deportation

Depraved.

"Go and bend your fish, you petty goldfish-catcher!"
This is so much better than my giraffe-adjacent encounter last weekend at an old country house with a STUFFED giraffe in it from the 19th century. Hurrah for living animals!

Someone once wrote a partly-serious long read on how Ross being turned into the pity figure in Friends - partly because he was clever - was the beginning of the end of America. I think about it every time my son rewatches the show.

“I’ll declare war on you if you don’t give me the peace prize” is an incredible bit
I like how the second para hints that the 'urban daubing' is a direct result of the PC-gone-mad appointment of a woman to the top job.
