Yesterday was the first statement and questions in Parliament regarding proposed plans for a Digital ID system.

I understand concerns people have both about civil liberties and data security. My main issue is that I'm not sure yet what question the proposals as they stand are the answer to.

Question from me: "I have been contacted by a large number of constituents in recent weeks, whose healthy scepticism about digital ID making a material difference in tackling illegal immigration I share. I think there is scope for better digital integration across the public sector more generally, but the Secretary of State talked in her statement about a lot of hypothetical things—things that this policy could do in the future—and the only use case that has been confirmed so far is right-to-work checks. Can we be clear on the use cases that we intend to pursue and over which timescales, so that we have the information we need to make a decision on whether we want to go down this path?"

Answer from Secretary of State Liz Kendall: "These are not hypotheticals; we are looking at how other countries have used these systems to deliver more effective Government and other services to their citizens. We have proposed having mandatory right-to-work checks by the end of the Parliament, but there will be many important voluntary ways in which people can better access services and support. We will be consulting on that fully when we come forward with the detailed proposals."

Side note: the photo there is taken outside Warrington Police Station, which was known as the "Palace of Justice" when it was opened in 1901 as it's such a gorgeous building. It needs a bit of love these days, but there's an excellent museum inside that gives you all the history if you're into that.

Amusingly when I raised their terrible service at Transport Questions recently, they got in touch with a load of stats to show everything is in fact fine (and where it isn't it's not their fault) despite the fact I don't know anyone who uses their services regularly who has that experience...

A joy to join Warrington Hongkongers at the Mahjong competition in Fearnhead, as part of the celebrations for the Mid-Autumn festival!

I've wanted to learn Mahjong for years and after some very patient tuition I think I'm getting the hang of it, though I won't be coming for the trophy for a while 😂

A moving vigil for the Heaton Park synagogue today. I headed over together with Cllr Mo Hussain to stand with them - both in our roles as MP and Mayor, and as Jews and Muslims together - united in our determination to stand against terror and stand up for our common humanity.

My statement on the terrorist attack on Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue today.

My heart is broken today learning of the horrific terrorist attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue as the community gathered to mark Yom Kippur, the pinnacle of the high holy days in our tradition.

The Jewish community in the UK is tiny, and most of us will have friends, family or other close links to the congregation at Heaton Park shul. This feels not just like an attack on them but on all of us.

At the start of our services, we are reminded of the security notices which differentiate between the protocols for a fire and an attack on our building. Our synagogues, schools and communal institutions have security, and members of the community volunteer to keep us safe from those who wish us harm just because we are Jews. None of this should be necessary but today underscores the stark reality that it is.

I want to put on record my thank you to the police and emergency services, Community Security Trust, and all those who showed heroism today including worshippers and Rabbi Walker who reportedly barricaded the congregation inside the synagogue and was photographed in the aftermath with blood on his kittel.

My prayers are with the congregation as they mourn, with those injured for their swift recovery, and with all the Jewish community reeling from the news.

In my Machzor today, I am struck by the words of the writer Edmond Fleg - "I am a Jew, because in all places where there are tears and suffering the Jew weeps. I am a Jew, because in every age where the cry of despair is heard the Jew hopes". Alongside our revulsion and despair, may we also have hope for unity over division, for peace and for security, as we respond to this atrocity together.

But the speech of the conference was undoubtedly Margaret Aspinall, who spoke from the heart about what it means to finally have the Hillsborough Law introduced to Parliament for all the families like hers who have fought for so long for justice, accountability and change 🙏

It was great to see Warrington name-checked in the Prime Minister's speech, as a place drawing in significant tech investment both from the UK-US £150bn inward investment agreement as part of the state visit, and the new AI data centre plans unveiled at the Warrington Business Conference this month.

Home after a busy few days in Liverpool for Labour Party Conference!

My personal highlight definitely playing in the War of the Roses rugby league game, and scoring a try for my (historic) county - even if the trophy went to Yorkshire - alongside legends of the game like Adrian Morley 🌹

It's been ages since I last did Warrington Parkrun, so this morning I joined Cllr Robin Frith and 573 other runners to do just that!

Somehow managed a few seconds off a course PB I set back in January 2020, which feels like a lifetime ago now with everything that's happened since 🤯

Last nights interim published figures of CLP nominations for Deputy Leader are very encouraging for Lucy Powell. With 221 to 140, that’s 61%.

Final nominations will be known tomorrow but this shows clear support from members from the length and breadth of the country.
