🔥 Here is why we need MORE academic historians and humanists. Dazzling, wildly relevant perspectives set forth with rigor and clarity for our terrible moment

thank you @sonjadrimmer.bsky.social
The Facsimile Debate brings together all the ingredients familiar to the controversies that emerge when new or markedly improved technologies infiltrate the arts and education: moral panic and appeals to tradition on the one side; pragmatism, populism, and optimism on the other; and a gamut of differences splitting the two.

The soft opening for this was telling teachers to necromance chatbots out of Anne Frank. There’s a historical parallel to this I’ve been chewing on, a bit of gristle stuck in my teeth since I wrote this footnote about a public debate in Weimar Germany on the educative potential of replicas. 🧵
The use of copies to fill lacunae in collections was by no means always hitched to a progressive cause, as it was in this debate. For example, the Nazi-sponsored traveling exhibition Deutsche Größe of the early 1940s comprised replicas entirely. See Diebold

"Dog"
Diego De La Rosa 2022.
From the artist's insta:

"Since its beginnings, the majority of the Venezuelan population has been living in extreme poverty. From a lack of care of the political class to ine ective economic models, the Venezuelans have been pushed to search for miraculous solutions found in religion and fortune based activities, in order to cope with their precarious reality.
.
In this painting, De la Rosa explores how poverty has pushed Venezuelans to rely on mysticism and spirituality for their betterment. The painting portrays an impoverished scenery that is reminiscent of the poor communities that are found outside the main urban areas.
.
The dog is modelled after a stray that both Diego and his wife adopted from the streets in Caracas. Its appearance is embellished by a halo surrounding its head, and an ornamental collar on its neck. Both items serve to imbue the character with a sense of goodness and dignity. The halo is reminiscent of images of saints, found in christianity, while the collar design is directly inspired by garments worn by the heroes of independence, such as Simon Bolivar and Francisco de Miranda.
.
To illustrate the benevolence of the main character, the dog is accompanied by two items in front of its feet. A small bag of rice and mangos. While rice has become a product hard to acquire for many Venezuelans, mangos can be found growing on the trees on the street, and are an easy and accessible way of making ends for the hungry citizens. As such, the holy creature brings a humble bit of salvation to a community that has been abandoned by its leaders."

Thank you - I think you told me about this before, my vet doesn't seem to realise it's an option, but will ask again now!

The Seven-armed octopus (Haliphron atlanticus) is a large octopus species, that as its name suggests, has eight arms!

The reason it gets its name is that males have their hectocotylus (a specialized arm used for mating) curled up in a pouch, making it look like they only have seven arms

A seven-armed octopus (Haliphron atlanticus) swimming in ocean. Its arms are held together, with two arms extended a bit further, so it looks like a big pink blob. A seven-armed octopus (Haliphron atlanticus) swimming in a kelp forest. It looks like an orangish gelatinous blob with arms. A view of a seven-armed octopus's (Haliphron atlanticus) mouth. Its arms are spread out, showing the messy row of suckers and webbing. You can see the octopus's eight arms. The octopus is orange with white suckers. It is swimming in a kelp forest. A seven-armed octopus (Haliphron atlanticus) swimming towards the camera while extending its arms. Webbing is between its arms and the tips of the arms are curled outwards. The rest of the octopus is gelatinous. It is pink.

I'm sorry: "if I wish to see a virgin on-screen"?
My Favorite Actress Is Not Human
Tilly Norwood doesn’t need a hairstylist, has no regrettable posts, and if you wish to see a virgin on-screen, this is one of your better chances. That’s because she’s AI.

A picture of some AI girl standing on an AI landscape with an AI monster behind her. I'm gonna be so real: she looks about 14

Leave aside the Connolly campaign. Consider all the people who go through garda vetting. That is a significant bloc of the population- volunteer parents helping kids in sports, at scouts, in charities.

Will that police data leak if the Gardaí want to intervene in a political campaign in the future?

You have to admire the convenience of being able to told the tap and have your other hand in the water once you've dropped the toaster in the sink.
