I did translation hacks, fixes, and re-releases for the N64. Games: OoT/MQ, Majoras Mask, Shiren 2, Getter Love, Doshin, SimCity 64, 40 Winks, Glover, SSSV, etc. Now I do scanning, type-ins, and game preservation with Gaming Alexandria

wrote up a bit of info on a less common US revision of Micro Machines for the NES, featuring a pretty nasty bug, discovered just a little too late and then worked around by using a PLD to patch a single *bit*. this is what day one patches looked like in 1991!

Happy birthday to @rare.co.uk's Jet Force Gemini, which turns 26 today! Game 8 of Rare's 11-game run on the Nintendo 64 was interesting and unique, both in concept and in control scheme! We take dual analog sticks for granted now, but back in the 90s 3D control schemes were a real Wild West!

In the meantime also if you or someone you know is hiring remote or hybrid (Seattle) and are in the market for a software developer or engineering manager with a specialization in Python/backend development, data pipeline and platform work, and strong low-level skills, please HMU!

On an unrelated note, and this is something I really hate doing, I'm still looking for a job and while I'm pulling in some money through my work with @retrobitgaming.bsky.social I'm behind on several bills at the moment and could really use a hand. Please consider donating!

Continuing the spoopy theme for #RandomGameSaturday this week I have something really special. If I know you on discord you've probably already seen this but here's one of two known authentic prototypes of the unreleased NES game "Drac's Night Out". It's the one that the circulating dump comes from!
Drac's Night Out prototype cartridge. It's a blank NES cartridge with a hole cut out of the top cover near the cartridge contacts, with two EPROMs sticking out of the hole. Drac's Night Out title screen.

God I love that word. I can't remember where I saw it, but there was some video that said "Castlevania got its name because it's a Metroidvania set inside of a castle".

New Blog Post: What does it mean to add #64DD to Nintendo Classics?

I wanted to explain what it needs to do 64DD emulation, both technically for the 64DD hardware itself, and the games.

Dokodemo Dodgeball Fantasia (どこでもドッジボ−ルファンタジア) was a dodgeball RPG released for keitai in 2006. Yes, you read that right! It's got a coming-of-age story and a real time battle system. We preserved this game earlier this year, and it's incredibly unique.

I finally got the N64DD mug scanned in at high resolution (1600dpi 48-bit) and uploaded to IA. You can see the scans here: archive.org/details/64dd... and get a better view of the RandNet icons pictured on it.
A hi resolution scan of a mug. The mug itself has a yellow bar along the top and bottom. In the top bar in white is the letter S with a circle around it. In the bottom bar is Stachara 1999-2000 in white letters. Visible between the yellow bars are 8 columns of 6 icons each. The icons are cartoon-like images of animals, people, gens, a key, skull, party hat, etc. Some are outlined with black lines and others are fuzzy around the edges.

September 27 2000, Shiren the Wanderer 2 debuted on the N64 in Japan!
Designer Kouji Malta, who also worked on Earthbound, was inspired by the board game Catan when implementing the castle building mechanics; this entry remains a very popular game in the series to this day!
