My clinic is at that location and every time I see our houseless neighbors assemble there I'm not afraid. I am, however, saddened that I can't do more to help, and angered that our civic "leader's" response is to destroy what little they have and push them off somewhere else.

Eric’s my neighbor & while we don’t always agree he’s a person of good faith. We also follow the same habitrails including biking Blaisdell’s drugged-out 2900 block & he’s right about it being a locus of human misery but also no real threat to passersby. (Frey Fences made it much worse this summer.)

When I was twelve our toaster oven somehow caught on fire in the middle of the night. The only reason it was caught is because my older brother had gotten up to have a snack. To this day I never leave a toaster, regular or oven, plugged in when not being used.

with false promises "that a free-market economy will automatically solve the problem of poverty."

Leo described a "new tyranny," which shuns any kind of oversight and where the economy is structured "in such a way that sacrifices are demanded of the masses in order to serve the needs of the powerful." The poor, he wrote, are only allowed "drops that trickle down."

The pope openly challenged "prosperity theology" and called Christians to the practice of giving charity. "It will not solve the problem of world poverty, yet it must still be carried out, with intelligence, diligence and social responsibility," he wrote.

Popular movements that challenge "the empire of money," invite people to take on the cause to combat poverty alongside the poor, instead of on their behalf, and "make history," the pope said. It our duty, Leo said, to "make their voices heard, albeit in different ways, in order to point out and denounce such structural issues, even at the cost of appearing foolish or naïve."

The labor implications are my biggest gripe. It is an effort to direct even more capital to the ownership class by removing pesky workers, all under the bullshit guise of being "the future" or "inevitable".
