I mean…we had phone books, printed paper directories the phone company sent out every year - the white pages - and huge printed phone books for commercial numbers - the yellow pages. And we had personal address books with phone numbers we didn't call often. But we had to memorize our own # at least!

I *might* have lucked out, finally - my GP left the practice, and the NP who was hired to fill in for her until a new doctor can start seems very sharp, and like she actually cares.
