…based on my current circumstances. Like say I had a winter coat that did, in fact, protect me from past snow storms. But that coat isn’t serving me now that I don’t live in a place w/ snow storms and it’s harming me b/c now I’m always overheating. BUT if I live in a place that still gets chilly…

I wonder if it would help to aim for a smaller redirect. I struggle a lot w/ this because a lot of my anxiety is/was rooted in things that DID happen and WERE predictable (vs the idea that anxiety = irrational, unlikely fears). So I focus instead on what’s a more manageable outlook for me to have…

It’s all so heavy, man.

And of course, because this was not immediate family, I can’t really take time off to process and grieve. My job is more flexible so I could warn why I’m distracted, but I also don’t have the energy to explain and deal with (well-meaning) sympathy when I don’t even understand my own grief right now

I’m reminded how complicated grief is. Because it’s not just my own pain about the loss. It’s seeing my mom in pain and knowing that’s only a small part of what she’s feeling.

Like how I do even wrap my brain around that?

We just found out yesterday that someone close to the family passed a week ago from lung cancer. He’d pushed everyone away so we had no idea. And also didn’t find out until too late that his service was on Sunday, so we missed that opportunity for processing the grief too.

I really hate the inclination older black folk have toward pulling away and isolating when they’re sick. I hope it’s something that’s changing because we gotta let folks love on us while they can and prepare for the end when we know it’s coming
