White people who have spent decades thinking “Born in the USA” is patriotic and “Every Breath You Take” is a great wedding song are suddenly very concerned about not being able to understand lyrics to some songs at the Super Bowl halftime show.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?
A tweet from Bari Weiss that says “"It's shaken me to my core," a lieutenant said of Mamdani's unexpected victory in June. "The absolute dread I feel is palpable.
"
Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”

"Transsexuality is bourgeois" reflects the common belief that medicine, technology, and any improvements to quality of life are owed to capitalism. The reality is that capitalism holds these improvements hostage for the sake of wealth.

I described my website like this once. Ultimately it's true. It's all static pages, intends to be very Web 1.0, just with some modern rendering options provided by the years of incremental changes to HTML and CSS that have occurred since the mid-90's.

I don’t think I ever posted this here.
A sketch of a naked wolf girl on a beach. Someone is asking where her swimsuit is, but she doesn’t understand the question.

To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.
Los Angeles County declares state of emergency over immigration raids
Los Angeles County officials voted on Tuesday to declare a state of emergency over ongoing federal immigration raids.

Three Washington cities on here, none are Seattle
parkingreform.org
So far in 2025, 11 cities have clearly signaled that the era of mandatory parking is coming to an end! 🎉

parkingreform.org/mandates-map/
A table titled "Cities That Abolished Parking Mandates in 2025". It lists cities and the dates they removed mandatory parking requirements. The cities are Toledo, OH (Sep 9); Oak Forest, IL (Aug 26); Shoreline, WA (Aug 11); Denver, CO (Aug 5); Boulder, CO (Jul 24); Botnell, WA (Jul 8); Bremerton, WA (Jun 4); Fairview, OR (Jun 4); Franklin, WI (May 6); Fitchburg, WI (Apr 8); and Sherbrooke, QC (Apr 8).

people won't voluntary use a crappy bus. you need actually good transit, ideally grade separated rail but a street running fast bus service with dedicated lanes and signal priority will do in a pinch

"I took the bus to work"

"what's wrong with your car?"

"nothing. gas is $5"

real conversation I had at work one day. the bus to my job at the time was slow enough I didn't stick to doing that long.

as EVs become more of a thing, sustained high gas prices will drive their adoption but only among new car buyers. gas demand is inelastic because driving was made mandatory and you gotta get to work no matter what. I somehow survived $6/gal back when I was stuck as a doordash driver

What is even the purpose of SEPA if a 594-stall parking garage is able to receive a "determination of non-significance"

It sounds bizarre but this is the root of modern planning policy in America. Planning believes it needs to reduce the competition for drivers trying to find space to move around and park. To them, more housing makes that harder, more huge parking garages makes that easier.

I used to think people just didn’t understand what Columbus did but now I think some are really attached to him (as opposed to other worthy italians to celebrate) because their whole thing is not only getting away with doing horrible things but forcing everyone to praise them for being horrible
