I am constantly struck by how the 21st century sucks about as much as post World War II 20th century science fiction authors, filmmakers and series producers thought it would.

Man, every time angry tweets about Canadian, Aussie or Brit politics passes thorough my timeline, the reminder of how comparatively benign the things that pass for an outrageous transgression of norms or a political scandal in democracies are leaves me sad and a bit nauseated.

Now that "Is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?" season is here, just wanted to note that no finance know-it-all showed up with a legit reason Nakatomi would have (with coupons), $376,000,000 in 2025 dollars worth of bearer bonds. We stopped printing them in 1982 because they mostly only useful for crime.
I remain troubled that no one ever looked into why any company needs to keep the inflation adjusted equivalent of q quarter billion bucks in bearer bonds, though. I mean, dodgy by definition.

Sometimes I get this feeling of utter frustration as a generation points and says "hey, they can't do that, can they?" at each thing that happens without being able to piece them together because they somehow got the idea that democracy is a sham not all that much better than the alternatives.
