The war of 1812 left that theory as adequate protection completely dead, and we got a standing army anyway. And the 2nd has basically been vestigial ever since. This is so far past the opposite of original intent it’s absurd.

Maybe my reading of the federalist papers is shit. But my understanding of the 2nd amendment is that they were so paranoid about an executive commanding a standing army that they wanted local forces called to muster for national defense and then sent home when the threat passed. /

It’s been really interesting following @sarahtaber.bsky.social’s take on how this has happened. In a nutshell, farm policy makes them excellent tax shelters. But you needs a different job to have an income to be sheltering. Corn & soy are low maintenance crops. Therefore, absentee landlord farmers

There are so many activities of Democrats and all of our institutions that have failed us. But, “a strong man fixes society through sheer force of will” is a specific fantasy I’ve grown extremely tired of recently.

It’s one of the greatest things. I’ve had more than one parent at parks ask about it and then leave with a bunch of browser tabs open with accessibility bike information so they can take their kids on the trails.
