Vance's latest rant has set off another misguided round of "free Usha" rhetoric. This isn't just inaccurate--she's wholly a part of this fascist project--it's dangerous. We can no longer afford to imagine fascism as smaller than it is. Hindu fascism is vast, too. No religion is immune.

It "cannot produce new knowledge" seems important.
Encouraging undergraduates to *start* with AI, robs them of the skills they need to begin learning how to be a history detective. And when you move up to the graduate level, AI doesn't have access to actual archives. And it cannot produce new knowledge. *YOU* have to do that.

You have to learn how to probe, how to uncover, how to read against the grain, how to find unusual sources, how to interpret those sources. How to piece together a puzzle
It also robs students of learning *how* to research.

A big part of being a historian is being a detective! Who did this? Why? Where? Why does it matter in the grand scheme of things? One thing worth remembering as all of this Epstein stuff roils is that we know of multiple occasions in which women were paid to keep them from talking about having sex with Trump.
