CBS reporter Edward R. Murrow embodied what a journalist should be: someone who holds power to account instead of capitulating to it.

Over 70 years later, his segment denouncing Joe McCarthy’s congressional witch hunts rings truer than ever.

Certain celebrity deaths are harder to process than others because the person in question was so full of life and creativity and originality that you just assume it's never going to end.

It's wild that we've reached a point where the President openly admits to firing people for political reasons, and his OMB director tweets about it like it's a victory. This is page one of the authoritarian playbook, happening in plain sight.

This week I got to The Ledges in Vermont for the only time this year. But nice way to end the season! I missed most of the fall foliage, which came early due to a lack of rain that kept the reservoir low and the path dry. But while the distant hills appeared barren, I saw a bit more color closer up.
Bare me standing on a rock bed overlooking a lake with mostly barren hills in the background Green grass and a dry creekbed with late-stage fall foliage and water in the distance

So glad to hear: After an uncertain hiatus, next summer we in the Northeast U.S. will have an Eastern Naturist Gathering! And it’ll be back in the hands of the Naturist Society—and at a nudist venue (Penn Sylvan, host of the MoonGrove Festival). @naturistsociety.bsky.social

This is amazing. Your poses are impressive! Just curious: Is the drop right next to you an illusion or is there more ground to your left in case you slip? 😬

"The president has already announced that if a judge does rule against him, he will invoke the Insurrection Act and then continue the military deployments. This is where we’ve been headed since January 6, 2021.”

What will it take for regular people to understand that if they refuse to stand up against fascism they will not be spared? Fascism is a serial killer with no restrictions on who it targets.

As I keep needing to be reminded, I thought I'd remind all my wonderful creator friends:

Art, creation — these are enemies of fascism. In times when we feel we shouldn't be mucking about with frivolous art because of what's happening in our streets, that's when we need to make it most.

If you had written this as a fake news headline a year ago, you would be called hysterical.

“Universally,” no, but there’s value even in just bringing up the issue through a survey. Once you start digging into what exactly people object to, I think there’s less disapproval than we think—if we can counter misperceptions. And allowing any “public” nudity at all doesn’t mean no restrictions.

Good article, with a personal touch.

When open and mutual nudity are only in sexual or abusive contexts, too many people associate nudity in itself with these things. But lack of simple exposure to nudity harms in different ways. When casual nudity exists outside these contexts, all harms lessen.

We’re protecting people from the wrong things.

Fear of natural bodies distracts us from the real crisis: body shame, social media pressure & unrealistic beauty standards.

Is any parkland an exception? It’s really too bad this went from technically allowing someone to walk naked in the center of town to virtually no nudity at all within city limits. Tbh I wish people hadn’t overstepped. The Berlin, Germany model of some nudity in public parks could’ve worked instead 😕

What’s “it” that you think won’t happen?
nakedallnight.bsky.social
Thank you for this perspective. I feel like: Someone is embracing nudity; I embrace nudism; why do I cut this person off because of the particular way they embrace it? Plus it’s their own body. If someone else doesn’t like it, it seems counter to body acceptance to say “We don’t want to see that.”

Interesting data. See the whole thread👇

It’s hard for me to fathom objecting to someone being nude in their own garden (also living in the highly developed northeast US, it’s also hard to relate to even having a private garden!) But we should build on where majorities do think nudity is acceptable.

New polling on nudity
Do Americans like or dislike being naked?
% of U.S. adult citizens who…
Love it 10%
Like it 14%
Neither like nor dislike it 44%
Dislike it 19%
Hate it 6%

A chart of YouGov polling data with the headline: "One-quarter of Americans love or like being naked and just as many hate or dislike it."

The chart's sub-headline is: "How much do you like or dislike being naked? (%)."

One of the most helpful writings I’ve ever read on naturism/nudism/whatever you want to call it, and I’m sure I’ll revisit it. Divide #2 is particularly insightful; the bar should be very high before excluding anybody. (Tbh, my favorite crowd is at a site where many people just happen to go naked.)
nakedallnight.bsky.social
Yes! And all the traffic that entails. 😉 I’m still almost always at inland spots in the woods to go nude, but that’s a treat when I can make it down there.

It’s the US holiday weekend marking the unofficial end of summer, and while I made it to inland swimming holes lots of times, I didn’t visit the nude ocean beach this year.

This is “from the archives” of the last few years. Gotta love a clothing-optional beach with a distant skyline. #GunnisonBeach
