“Sensory processing reformats odor coding around valence and dynamics”
www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

We ask: how is a sensory code transformed across multiple stages of processing to inform behavior?
Sensory processing reformats odor coding around valence and dynamics
Extracting relevant features of a complex sensory signal typically involves sequential processing through multiple brain regions. However, identifying the logic and mechanisms of these transformations...

Girls as young as eight show a unique sensitivity to numbers representing their body weight, a new study finds. The results highlight early gender differences in attention and raise questions about how body awareness develops and affects girls’ perceptions later in life.

Out today in @plosbiology.org! We show that two major advances in fish feeding - highly protrusible jaws and large teeth - are functionally and evolutionarily incompatible with each other. @mikemihalitsis.bsky.social and Peter Wainwright. Free to read: journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...
Incompatibility between two major innovations shaped the diversification of fish feeding mechanisms
Large teeth and highly protrusible jaws are two feeding innovations that have evolved in fishes. High-speed videography and comparative phylogenetic analyses indicate that they are incompatible with e...

Turns out, two of pain’s most famous messengers — Substance P and CGRPα — might not be so essential after all. Mice missing both still felt pain just fine, challenging decades of assumptions about how pain signals travel.

There has been a lot of chatter today about Zelenskyy's meeting with Trump, some regarding this moment when White House correspondent Brian Glenn asked if the Ukrainian president plans to wear a suit. I want to address idea in this thread. 🧵

We begin the New Year with two preprints on hypothalamic development. The first, part of a long-term collaboration with Marysia Placzek’s group, investigates the organization of the developing forebrain, and show that current models are (mostly) incorrect./1

Resolving forebrain developmental organisation by analysis of differential growth patterns
The forebrain is the most complex region of the vertebrate CNS, and its developmental organisation is controversial. We fate-mapped the embryonic chick forebrain using lipophilic dyes and Cre-recombin...

Yes!!! I’ve been saying this forever! Just a lil universal template to accompany each experiment that can be adapted and shared regardless of result.

Like field notes or those quirky diary entries by scientists from eras long ago, just more searchable
There should be an open repository - like bioRxiv, but much more casual - where people can document their failed projects that aren't worth the trouble of trying to publish. A massive graveyard of hypotheses with rich indexing, focusing on methodological choices. #neuroskyence #psychscisky #science

And the fact is that there are *plenty* of Michigan Democrats (voters and officials) in Wayne County trying to keep the City of #Detroit down because it is 77% Black.

We should be building housing like crazy in this city and transit too.

Michigan will never rise again without Detroit.
