Apparently the Ford government is removing the law that prevented Air Miles from expiring. A popular and sensible law, removed to accommodate a business at the expense of regular people.

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Today is National Housing Day. I write this from Vancouver, one of Canada’s wealthiest cities, and where homelessness reached an all-time high this year.

It wasn’t always this way. Canada has a massive deficit of affordable public housing, ever since Liberal governments slashed funding in the 90s.

Big tech will define this economic era, much as finance has the past 40 years. Canada has jealously guarded its financial sovereignty in the face of constant pressure because its role in safeguarding Canadian independence is well understood. Digital policy must be given the same regard.

Incentivizing companies with tax breaks and deregulation won’t come close to restructuring the Canadian economy. That’s out-of-date thinking. The private sector will follow the market. It shouldn’t be counted on to lead. The federal and provincial governments must get directly into the game.
