Teachers love a good brain scan, but neuroscience tells us far less about teaching than we like to think. New 2025 studies show neuromyths still thriving in classrooms worldwide. It’s time to stop mistaking neurofolklore for knowledge. 🧠👇

I am blogging again!!!

Like many others, I've moved over to Substack for a bit of a refresh. First entry is on school improvement - where to start, and what things matter.

I'm weirdly a bit nervous about it it's been so long 😭😭

School Improvement Starts Here: Behaviour, Participation, and Memory
All schools can improve, but it's often hard to know where to start. In most contexts, we can begin by asking three simple questions.

The other animation is Lightbulb Moments: Being Autistic.

So much about Autistic experience is still missing from most professional accounts, which have been formulated from the outside.

Many people talk about all these little epiphanies: 'I thought it was just me!'

First up is Discovering You're Autistic, about the experience of realising you're autistic, and the things we've found most valuable for anyone starting out on that journay.

Realising that there are many other people out there with similar experiences is so powerful.

A very important read...
Despite best intentions and significant investment, England’s SEND system is failing too many students and their families. To fix it, we need to understand why.

Mega-thread summary of my presentation at #FestivalOfEducation today:

That's a pretty awesome reason for the museum to be closed!

The Stars of Avalon. Photo taken on Glastonbury Tor last night. As usual I am rubbish at knowing exactly what I am capturing in the night sky but I really love being up there at night and we were the only ones up there too.
I'm not an English teacher but this is a very interesting insight and I can see how it applies to science (and any other subject) too. A great read.
Why do students say “it make the reader want to read on”?
Because it feels right.
Because they don’t know what else to say.
Because we never taught them how to say anything better.
If we want analysis, we need to teach it: one sentence at a time.

Why students say, ‘It makes the reader want to read on’
How the curse of knowledge, the confusion between speech and writing, and a lack of explicit modelling keep students stuck in shallow analysis
