Here's a bonus ep of Better Offline. I report on how OpenAI’s new "router-based" ChatGPT-5 makes it impossible for OpenAI to cache the static prompt for any model or tool it uses every single prompt, doubling token burn for mediocre gains.

If you need more ideas on how to explain to a TD (who may get their secretary to print out emails and then handwrites the replies in fountain pen) why this is a bad idea, I have a few extra ones here (no paywall)

Please read this piece by the irreplaceable Olga Cronin explaining why the Government’s plans to legislate to break encryption are a Bad Idea, and then explain it by email (good), phone call (better) or personal visit (amazing) to your local TDs.

Opinion: Letting gardaí access our WhatsApps and chats to investigate crime could backfire
Forcing companies to create access pathways would insert vulnerabilities that could be exploited

I call your "creamery" and raise you my local cake/ice cream/cafe shop called RYM CAFE. I giggle every time I go past it. What possessed the owners to name it that...😅

Really, very seriously, the UK tax & finance system is dedicated to preserving the advantages accrued to people who are already rich, at the expense of supporting everyone else to be merely, modestly, prosperous. It’s a foetid, stagnant system, one that a Labour Party should be ashamed to support.
”Britain is economically dead,” argues Prof Richard Murphy. “We are being screwed by the system, and not by accident. It's by design…What we're seeing here is market failure. But it's also the consequence of deliberate political policy.”

Economically dead: what is wrong with our economy?
The Resolution Foundation says UK incomes will flatline until 2030. This isn't an accident – it's by design; we need change

Israel is now bombing my father’s hometown of Yazd, so in lieu of talking about how terrified and furious I am in this moment, let me tell you a little about Yazd. 🧵

If a colleague had the reliability rate of an LLM, they would be fired. If ordinary* software did, it would be uninstalled.

LLMs require the chat format, because chat makes us party to the conversation. We insert the meaning ourselves - and hold it to a different standard. It's the mirror effect.
If a human told you things that were correct 80% of the time but claimed, flat out, with absolute confidence, that they were correct 100% of the time, you would dislike them & never trust a word they say. All I'm really suggesting is for people to treat chatbots with that same distrust & antagonism.

Just out! Our peer-reviewed critique of the Cass Review has been published by BMC Medical Research Methodology. Please read and share. We show that the Cass Review is fatally flawed and should not be the basis for policy or practice in transgender healthcare.

The Alt National Park Service account calls itself the official "resistance" team of the US National Park Service. With 887k followers, is one of the biggest accounts on Bluesky. It is the 11 most followed account according to some trackers.

This thread will dive into its activity.

do not install any app from Facebook or Meta on any device. Ideally avoid installing ANY social media app. Login through a browser.

I highly doubt Facebook is the only company pulling this shit

Analyzed 30 years of UK trans media coverage across 12,000+ articles. Found coverage exploded after 2016, with public support dropping 18% as stories shifted from rights-based to threat-based narratives. Shows manufactured controversy, not grassroots concern.
Was wondering about this, definitely have felt that change watching recently published videos

The Cass Review gets peer reviewed and absolutely shredded

Cass is the Wakefield of our time. A scandal in broad daylight
This is the dumbest take, we do absolutely not have to hand it to someone who did the absolute bear minimum

In 2022, Curtis Yarvin (Peter Thiel’s “in-house philosopher”) wrote that, “it is Russia’s fate to again to restore order in Europe,” but “Trump needs to let Putin really know it’s okay to do it.” Yarvin added: “There is only one way to send this message unequivocally: withdraw from Europe.” 1/

This "debate" about who should use what toilet doesn’t benefit anyone. It doesn’t fix the underfunding of women's refuges, NHS waiting lists leaving women in terrible pain, mums skipping meals to feed their kids. How about we get on with tackling the real issues affecting women?

Handy variety of blocklists here for accounts that are follow-farming, where you can block by selecting the threshold for the number of accounts they're following.

The term "Luddite" as a pejorative synonym for "technophobe" was a technocrat PR coup; that's not what Luddites were about. They were a labour movement fighting to give workers control over technologies which were advancing w/o oversight and rapidly automating them out of their jobs. Sound familiar?
