[1] I came back for Grant Morrison (definitely low-tier work for him) and House of X/Powers of X (pretty good, but I bailed on the follow-up series quickly). Maybe I’ll try another series before the decade is out. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I stopped [1] reading X-Men in 1988 so…

What's an opinion about X-Men that'll get you sent to jail? Is Jean really interesting or really boring? Should Logan have stayed dead? Do you think a certain x-mens outfit is positively horrendous even though people seem to love it?

The Brood Saga is better than Dark Phoenix imo 🤷

The actual conservative position on manufacturing is “of course we should be exploiting labor to make cheap goods, as long as it’s not *my* labor!”

It's hard to help Americans left behind because so much of US identity is rooted in individualism. The average American conservative holds all three positions at once:

— Virtue signals about supporting US manufacturing
— Against raising the minimum wage
— Buys foreign imports because they're cheap
HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "I'm willing to pay more for quality products if they are made in America, by Americans, who are paid a decent income." The tweet shows Norman Rockwell's "Freedom of Speech" painting, which is often used to show the tweeter is expressing a brave opinion. HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "MINIMUM WAGE JOBS WERE NOT MEANT TO BE A CAREER. Why does no one understand this? Entry level jobs are STEPPING STONES to better jobs. No one wants to work towards that though." HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "Buy $5 gloves instead of $50 ones. Trust me." The tweet shows a box of "Gorilla Grip" gloves. The label on Gorilla Grip gloves show they're made in China.

NB: Librarians have specific training in this! Helping folks find books that they will like in genres they are unfamiliar with. We call it “reader’s advisory.” ASK YOUR LIBRARIANS (bonus: many of us are SFF nerds and you will get deep cuts of the good shit)

Sure. That said, not everyone knows what they want to read when they first approach a genre, and if they ask someone with more experience in that area, it's useful to be able to point to something that will be a enjoyable gateway text for them. They can explore further and deeper from there.

And you know something? Everyone should try whatever they feel like reading. Your adolescent / YA could go on to write a doctoral thesis on Contemporary Biases in Vintage Science Fiction - which they could never do without reading it.

Great walk-through of why manufacturing things (in this case shirts) in the United States is expensive.

(And tangentially how conservatives hate to pay a reasonable price for things.)
dieworkwear.bsky.social
This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧵
Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."

This is really a placeholder for a lot of specific reports of “this thing is taking an unreasonably long time” either in an unreproducible manner, or for only one specific user.

TBH I was surprised at how nuclear it is. It doesn’t even allow me the option to view a muted post if I choose, like Twitter did.

I'm perplexed at watching pundits in the trades struggling to explain Tron Ares' disappointing opening.

Was it covid? Do people just not like science fiction? etc. etc.

The main reason is pretty obvious: Tron isn't a popular franchise. Nobody's interested in nostalgia for a failed 1980s project.

Jon Fasman catches up to the rest of America circa 1958 or so.

I doubt the Wall Street Journal will even get that far.

Compared to Dylan and Springsteen, country-music legend Johnny Cash can seem deeply uncool. It took time for me to appreciate his profound, plainspoken strength, writes Jon Fasman.

Okay, so admittedly the first Tron was a critical and box office flop, and the second Tron was also a critical and box office flop, but I have some high expectations for this new Tron starring a man who exclusively makes critical and box office flops!
