Every time a tech entrepreneur says “we don’t need to stop global warming because AI will” I want to slap them with a fish that says, “if a superhuman intelligence came into being and we asked it how to stop global warming, it would say ‘stop burning fossil fuels, you fools.’”
I’m going to regret asking this, but… what mechanism are people proposing whereby AI will “end scarcity”?

This feels like literal underpants gnomes thinking, and as I never tire of pointing out, it’s being driven by a lot of the same actual people
AI could end scarcity, end humanity - or boost trend growth by 0.2 percentage points

I can’t imagine that there are any ICE members who read my books and are on Bluesky, but just on the very off chance—you’re monsters, you’d be the villains of anything I write, the Church of the White Rat would work to bring you down, Alex Easton would spit in your face, and I hope you die alone.
In a massive show of cowardice Ice is now putting out video “demanding” Americans be nice to the Gestapo doing terrorism against them or else.

You know what that means America. Time to turn up the volume and show these Nazi cowards what we really think of them and their fascist terror.

I still remember Chicken Little decades after reading the Space Merchants! Definitely agree fewer books embrace surreal idea like that these days.
I'm reading this book for my long-running book club focusing on sci-fi and fantasy. We read both old books and new and after years of doing it, we're on the verge of quitting new books. Old books are often not as well-written (this one is, though), but new books disappoint us by being boring af.

I was looking over my Goodreads and simply can't believe how long ago the beginning of the year seems like. So a year end thread of my highlights.

I don't think we should be too concerned, but if scientists start teaching butterflies about Chaos Theory then the world is doomed.
This really isn't anything to worry about, but if we give the orcas hands we're fucked.
the people afraid of Roko’s Basilisk and grey goo are wrong: giving mushrooms mechas is how humanity actually ends

Usually the only downside of attending GenCon is being away from my cat for a few days.

This year there's another reason: I'll be missing Pelicon too! It's not just the lineup of games, the GMs I know who are involved are top notch.
