Hope Davis - 📽️ The Daytrippers (Greg Mottola, 1997)

Davis anchors the whole family road trip comedy (and has killer sister chemistry with Parker Posey). Her quest to New York to confront her probably cheating husband (Stanley Tucci) feels important and tragic due to her naturally expressive nature.

Yuen Qiu - 📽️ Kung Fu Hustle (Stephen Chow, 2004)

Need I elaborate? The Landlady of Pigsty Alley is the greatest image and character of any Chow movie, a strong-willed snarker who steals the movie and fires sonic screams that destroy all matter. It’s one of the peak comedy performances.

Stephen Dillane - 📽️ Outlaw King (David Mackenzie, 2018)

Stannis finally got his kingdom here, and Dillane is the ensemble’s best performance as Edward Longshanks. He’s irked by a scheming son (Billy Howle) and a rebellion led by Robert the Bruce (Chris Pine), but gets his own slick fight scene too.

Ann Savage - 📽️ My Winnipeg (Guy Maddin, 2007)

Maddin tracked down the 1940s noir starlet (Detour) for what would be her final role, representing his mother. She’s the highlight of one of the most wonderfully weird and funny autobiographical films ever made, and one of Canada’s finest films.

Calvin Lockhart - Cotton Comes to Harlem (Ossie Davis, 1970)

The genius Davis pioneered Blaxploitation with this wacky crime yarn. Every actor feels excited to get a more blunt, funny, and showcased role than usual, but Lockhart’s gleefully evil Deke “Reverend” O’Malley is the standout.

Another small but rewarding act of strike solidarity is watching John Sayles’ 1987 masterpiece Matewan starring a bulletproof ensemble of David Strathairn, James Earl Jones, Mary McDonnell, Kevin Tighe, Gordon Clapp, Will Oldham, Ken Jenkins, Bob Gunton, Nancy Mette, and introducing Chris Cooper. 📽️

Bottoms was very funny. I enjoy how it threads clever sketch comedy logic to connect multiple storylines/setting lore/running jokes like some chaotic Mr. Show quilt. And it is full of talented actors who should help bring back romcoms, studio comedies, and mid-budget movies. But her most of all.

I think the spitting contempt and bigotry Kacsmaryk shows towards LGBT people in his decisions is the kind of behavior that deserves official sanction if not outright impeachment.
Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk refuses to grant relief to Texas college students who may be punished for hosting a drag show.

His condemns drag as “vulgar and lewd” “sexualized conduct” that harms children and is likely unprotected by the First Amendment. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
