To power the Machines of our invention

And spite the Gods that abandoned us

The Heart Of Enterprise by Stafford Beer
addendum. Of course, Beer's conception of freedom clarifies also the dynamic described here: the conservative family sees fit to enforce gender norms, hence it becomes a matter of paternal duty to restrict the autonomy of the child. Patriarchy structures the purpose of the family as perceived.
The problem of course is that it's really, really hard to sit people down and really convey to them that this is what it boils down to: an ideology that demands the state be wielded to police what people are allowed to do with their own bodies.
I also think that most people would disagree vigorously with conservatism here on this fundamental level: that it be the *government's* job to enforce gender norms - especially if they realize what government must actually *do* to *real people* in service of that goal.
The important thing here is that conservatives really do imagine this to be "freedom!" A "free" society cannot have trans people out and about! Our existence threatens what they perceive to be the very *purpose* of society itself: being openly trans is *intrinsically* criminal!
This clarified a lot to me re: trans rights: conservative government sees as part of its purpose the enforcement of gender norms (patriarchy and cisheteronormativity). Then the curtailment of bodily autonomy of queer people is a forgone conclusion: it's necessary for their idea of social cohesion.
i understand less than a quarter of this paper since i am a total dunce when it comes to chemistry knowledge
