🌱All week on Moving Writers: Poetry Pauses for Hope.
It's a series of tiny lessons, easy to integrate, that get students contemplating and writing about hope.

The first poem? Emily Dickinson, of course, with a twist you may not have tried before.

If you have it please donate cash to the food banks. $10 in their hands will feed more people than the $10 worth of canned goods you can buy for retail prices. Also check on your elders. Many of them will not admit they rely on these programs so grocery gift cards or a surprise bag of staples

The over-reliance on standardization as the mechanism for writing instruction really was a pretty unbeatable context to produce de-professionalized teachers okay with using AI to grade
Did she show you Sora? That's what really freaked me out.

Using Google's Notebook LM, I explored the intersection of the BC Ministry of Education's "Considerations for Using AI Tools in K-12 Schools," the OECD's AI Literacy Framework, and UNESCO's "AI Competency Framework for Students" to create this list of ten essential AI competencies for our students.
This is fantastic! Thank you for sharing.
Especially when it comes to hallucinations and bias.

My head was spinning after the two days we spent with Holly. I'll make sure to write up my thoughts when (if?) I get time.

She's going to be the Keynote speaker at PETE&C this year.
It's scary how realistic AI images and videos are getting, and we need to take that into account when teaching students to vet sources. I will never be okay with outsourcing thinking or creativity, but I think we need to make sure students are educated when it comes to AI.
I don't think we should ignore it, though. We just had some excellent PD on AI in Education from Holly Clark. She argued that it's up to us (the educators) to make sure our students are AI literate, so they are aware of how this technology works for better or for worse.

For Indigenous Peoples' Day I wanted to highlight a sampling of recent(ish) work that has really shaped my understandings and informed my practice as an ELA educator. First is Daniel Heath Justice's Why Indigenous Literatures Matter:

Oedipus Rex is what I thought of first.
My ears still hurt from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones concert I went to when I was in college.
My Banned Books Week plan is to make sure I've read all of these. As an ELA Instructional Coach, I'm seeing that I'm in a position to speak out against challenges if they occur in my district. We haven't had any major challenges, but teachers have concerns.
I just followed her! I love it!!! I may need to order her books.
I did not know that! That sounds so cool. I'd love to see her work!
I was going to stop in today, but I'm trying not to spend money, and I already have too much yarn. Her yarn looks gorgeous!
This is a good reminder. I should probably sit with my journal and see what happens. I'm sure I'll feel better.
I'm going to come back to it every time impostor syndrome attacks me (like right now).

I'm noticing that I get it when I have a really good day. Instead of enjoying it, I second-guess everything and convince myself I'm a fraud. Why am I like this?
