Totally! In my own experiences (at protests, work, daily life) the average lib wine moms are very vocally pro-Palestine AND pro-trans rights. Many are also pro-Medicare for All. It's wild how people talk about their politics online!

Things around here just got a little bit more interesting...

I'm running for Congress because the rest of us can use a break. Especially if you've got a growing family.

Miss Major was known as many things in her community — a caretaker for other Black trans women, a defender of the homeless and the incarcerated, and a Stonewall veteran who did not want the past to be used as an excuse for inaction.

Rest in power, Mama Major! 💜🙏🏽

It was a blessing to live in the same earthly timeline as you. A true freedom fighter, you never stopped reminding trans people—especially Black trans people—of our worth and our power.

Because of Major, our foundation is unshakeable and our liberation inevitable.

I'd also recommend Christine Day's I Can Make This Promise. Some students read this title as part of a lit circle in my methods course a few semesters ago.

We're reading Eric Gansworth's If I Ever Get Out of Here in my methods course. Gansworth is local-ish, so there are plenty of places in the books that my students recognized!

For Indigenous Peoples' Day I wanted to highlight a sampling of recent(ish) work that has really shaped my understandings and informed my practice as an ELA educator. First is Daniel Heath Justice's Why Indigenous Literatures Matter:

Do not assume that everything they set out to do is inevitable. They have been successfully fought on multiple fronts, from courtroom wins that have actually stuck to city and state governments that haven't backed down, to activists in the streets organizing against their violence.

✅ He fired a U.S. Attorney who refused to bring charges against her
✅ He replaced them with someone with NO prosecutorial experience

This isn't justice. This is retaliation.

When Black women do their jobs with excellence, they face attacks. But AG James isn't backing down, and neither should we.

Of course, M4L don't care about this distinction. They're trying to turn an issue that's polling terribly for them into white grievance politics. Still, the more we can talk about book bans as an *electoral* issue the better because we can organize people to vote out book banning politicians.
hcodymiller.bsky.social
I use these slides too often, specifically with the TKAM example:
Image that reads:

Book Ban: Political body (ex. State legislature, school board) removes books, makes it illegal to carry certain titles.

Curriculum Change: An educator(s) (ex. teacher, professor, dept.) update or change one or more books for another book. Slide that reads:

"A district or state banning (removing) To Kill a Mockingbird because it discusses racism is different than a district changing out To Kill a
Mockingbird with another book (ex. YAL) to discuss contemporary racism.

In the former example, the book is no longer in the school. In the latter example, the book is still in the school (ex. bookshelf, library) but not the focal point of a curricular unit of study."
hcodymiller.bsky.social
Worth saying that a curriculum change is *not* a book ban. A teacher may replace/update TKAM in their curriculum. Students can still access TKAM at their school library or in a classroom library. M4L want to remove books from classrooms, libraries, & other public spaces. Intent & access matter here!

Mom's 4 Liberty finally realizes they are on the losing end of a 75-25 issue seeing @rweingarten.bsky.social celebrating banned books and just decide to go with, no, no, the liberals are the book banners.
moms 4 liberty tweet attacking "the left" for being the real book banners because Randi Weingarten is celebrating banned book week.

A huge shoutout to one of the best to ever do it, @heymrsbond.com! My class read both of her pieces on AI in the classroom this week. Her words brought so much hope and tangible ideas to my students (and me) about teaching in this present moment. 📚🤓

🧵 In 2025, book censorship in the United States is rampant and common. Never before in the life of any living American have so many books been systematically removed from school libraries across the country.
