Wait, what? My son’s friend, traveling in China, is staying at a hotel chain called ‘James Joyce Coffetel’, and instead of a Gideon Bible, they leave a copy of Ulysses by the bedside.

Good thread.
I left Ireland and moved to New York in 1997. Decades on, what the US has become has broken my immigrant heart.

It also baffled me, until I began to piece together Gen X memories of apartheid South Africa.

I got very into Hartley's films during the 90's and enjoyed them for how he showed how weird the experience of everyday life could be through his choices in direction.

Good article looking over his work. Reminds me I should catch up on his more recent films.

(And I can hear that header photo.)

It was the second release from the SST record label founded by Greg Ginn and Chuck Dukowski.

you gotta remember that from a conservative perspective, these programs are a failure. they don't want to reduce homelessness, they want to punish homeless people. they'd pay 10x as much for that happily
An Oregon pilot program giving cash to homeless youths sees a staggering reduction in homelessness. The program gave participants $1,000 cash payments each month for two years, and at the end of the project's first phase, 91% of participants reported being in stable housing.

Only on days ending in "y."
you ever find yourself staring vacantly into your fridge for a minute and half wondering what you even opened it for and what happened to your youth and what will become of everyone you love after you’re dead

I started reading this Derek Guy thread looking (successfully, as always) to learn things about tailoring and menswear, but unexpectedly found myself looking at a photo of F. Scott Fitzgerald and realizing somehow I made it this far (and read him a lot) without knowing what he looked like.
... through the Great Depression and onto the Ivy campuses of a booming post-war America. A soft, natural shoulder is critical because it creates a more casual look embodies this nation's democratic spirit.
