Trying to watch more cricket than I write about. 🏏 Seeing two books through the presses. One is about Nancy Sharp [https://tinyurl.com/2736jaw4]. C.L.R. James and John Arlott both get a mention in the other one [https://tinyurl.com/465bnwzv].

Thanks for this comprehensive round up. On an Essex front, I am sorry Richards couldn’t find a fit with the club, and vice versa, even allowing for what was a difficult season for him in terms of production. I hope he finds opportunity and success elsewhere.

England breathing a sigh of relief, perhaps? This should help with NRR relative to Aus—probably Maybe?

Sounds far more impactful than targeting bike lanes

Of course, explaining to them that "no result" is also possible is quite fun.

It is--and your question gives me the chance to say your charts are indeed lovely.

Looking forward to explaining to my baseball friends here why a total of 133/9 results in Pakistan needing 113 runs to win. Love #cricket and #maths. Combine the two and it's glorious.

Not sure I will be able to cope with a season when it's not clear what happens to any team not finishing first.

The best part of the Sheffield Shield for me is sharing the table with sports fan friends (or even 'regular' folk) and asking them to make sense of the points system.

Yes, if you were, say, 39-4. Runs doubled, not as many wickets lost🙂 But if we get a DLS match, no!

Pakistan saved by rain. #CWC25 🏏

Nipped over to the Pak v SA scorecard. Good for cricket, I suppose, to see the WTC winners losing to a team so often so fragile, but I have been really enjoying this post-NZ tour SA run, and Simon Harmer…—so, all in all, I am disappointed.

Another match, another inexplicable innings. Yet given what everyone but SA has then managed I’m feeling oddly confident. [Though rain, just to be sure, might be a good idea.]

Just two days ago I was reading an @nightwatchmanxi.bsky.social article about the history of the reverse sweep, and now here’s this about 1866 in The Call by Martin Flanagan. It’s a shot almost as old as overarm bowling. #cricket
Finally, Wills did what Grandfather hoped he would do. He produced the delivery that had terrified half the cricketers of Victoria and New South Wales, what is now called a 'bumper' but in those more gentlemanly days was always explained away as an accident caused by slippery fingers. The ball bounced halfway down the pitch and reared at Mullagh's head. As quick as a cat, Mullagh responded with the shot for which he was already famous in the district. He went down on one knee, slanting the bat in front of his face like a shield. Striking the bat, the ball skied over the wicketkeeper's head and hurried away to the long grass on the boundary. At the time, Wills stood in the middle of the pitch, chest heaving, hands on his hips, saying nothing, but afterwards he told Grandfather it was one of the best shots he had seen in a cricket field.

Stats highlights and trivia from match 15 of the Women's Cricket World Cup.

Nilakshika Silva starred as Sri Lanka batted first against New Zealand, before rain in Colombo deprived observers of a conclusion to the contest.
