At the midpoint, Brooke makes a major mistake with magic that endangers her and everyone around her. The consequences force her to realize that everything she thought she wanted was wrong and her actual goals (and thus stakes) lie in her found family and her magic.

Brooke goes through some major character growth & finds that her priorities have shifted significantly. I hope it's a satisfying end, although it certainly sets book two up for Brooke to have those new priorities thoroughly challenged!

Brooke hasn't had people in her life worth trusting, so naturally, I forced her into magic training for two years, so she can learn to trust her mentor & those around her. This has...mixed results. :)

Brooke grew up in a family that didn't have time for her, so she functionally raised herself until magic interfered & she found her last bridges burned. Naturally, she heads out on her own cynical, untrusting of adults, & determined to create her own future.
