Art in Everyday Life! I first discovered this book in my high school's library, and it was such an influence on my concepts of art and design and fashion. Eventually like 12 years ago I tracked down a used copy of the 4th edition for myself, and it's still fantastic.
At the University of Minnesota, the Goldstein sisters taught students how to solve complex design problems through the use of formal analysis. They also wrote a book, which outlined the five governing principles of good design: harmony, proportion, balance, rhythm, and emphasis.
