It's cynical in its presentation but at the same time a lot of these systems are ultimately a net negative for everyone. Being altruistic and humane is net positive that is ignored because people feel a need to be bigots, selfish, etc.

I think there is a disconnect with what people are referring to when discussing both fiction and non fiction.
