“The people who are being kept from their work, or excepted to carry the burden, or working from non-federal funds and trying to keep afloat while their colleagues wait to see how big their backlog will grow and what goals will become even less reachable due to the delay in getting to work?" (3/3)
“The archives workers who would love to talk about, hype up, and share their collections and the work they do, but are unable to because federal offices are not allowed to be active on social media during the shutdown?”
(2/3)
From a friend: “Can I ask you to mention the important work being done by federal repositories, archives, and museums?…” (1/3)
A friend no longer on social media is at home furloughed because of the shutdown instead of participating like they normally would :/
And a shoutout to all of the archivists who cannot participate in #AskAnArchivist this year because of the shutdown.

You are seen and respected.

It’s #AskAnArchivist day! 📖📚 Let us know in the comments any questions you may have about what we do or how we archive materials in the Southwest Music Archive, and we would be happy to answer!

It’s so frustrating when people express their anger at the folks who have no ability to fix things and/or were not a cause of the problem.

Y’all. Don’t yell at the retail clerk because you’re mad at the CEO.

IKEA needs to do D&D figure models of the popular toys.

Particularly the Aftonsparv alien.

Smallest boy needs one.
Yeah, my roommate is having a reaction too. :/

As someone who regularly jokes that she has a master's degree in 'stalking people on the internet' let me tell you that Alex de Campi is dropping lots of good advice here.

(I promise, I only use my library powers for awesome, I mean good. I use them for good)
Gonna write some brief troll mitigation tips for you all because like any successful, happy woman on the internet, i’ve had ‘em

Tips break down into two main areas:

1. Defensive tactics: how not to make it easy for them

2. Offensive tactics: fuck ‘em up

🧵:
Bridges. The answer is to do bridges (the exercise move, not as a walking path). Signed, my trick knee that wishes I would take my own damn advice.
But now I want to find some Very Hungry Caterpillar hoodies or onesies to wear when out with C 🐛
🤣 the former! I have a friend who used to work at the MIT caterpillar lab (as a science educator). We go very slowly and look at cool bugs. It’s awesome. She also does them formally with local groups like the Sierra Club and Master Naturalists.
A note to say: I am still around. I just spend a *lot* less time on social media these days.
Some of that is the World Today. Some of it is that my graduation gift to myself was a gaming system and last Xmas I got Zelda: BotW. Some of it is going for caterpillar walks with a local friend.

Our fall term events are, as always, free & open to the public! More events to come, including invited speakers; & our many coming makerspace workshops don't get announced right when term starts (to give students time to design them). Our upcoming events are always listed at scholarslab.org/event

One of DC's crime-infested hellholes at 8am on a Friday
Dad was USArmy doing a checkpoint at DuPont Circle in 1968. The only trouble he told us about was a driver who pulled out his gun for “id”. While dad was trying to figure out what to do, his passenger said “give the kid a break” and flashed a badge. They were DC cops.

Someone shared this with me and it pretty much made my day so I'm passing it on for everyone else's entertainment, too!
Sincerely delighted to discover, 45 minutes into this nearly-wordless three-hour documentary about French monks who take vows of silence, that among the reasons they *can* talk is "to make sure the monastery cats know when it's mealtime by making little kitty-calling noises at them."
