the AT&T acquisition of Time Warner and DirecTV alone triggered a massive layoff wave of more than 50,000 (!) people.

But each time the press covers a new chapter in Warner merger history that stuff is just completely memory holed.

Why do you think that's done editorially, do you wager?
After 50,000 Layoffs And Absolute Chaos, AT&T Ends Its Bungled Media Experiment
You might recall that AT&T spent nearly $200 billion to acquire Time Warner and DirecTV, believing this would turn the dodgy old phone company into an innovative new media juggernaut. But desp…

Holy Yup. "AI is Napster in reverse".
Big $ stealing from the public for profit is their revenge for Napster.
Its not crazy!
AI is just Napster in reverse for companies except they don't give a flying fuck about copyright if there is money to be made. You wouldn't download an employee would you?

The first school to market itself as AI free is going to corner the market on people interested in actually learning. And I would not be surprised if rich families and the children of people creating this tech were the first movers.
My employer, Dartmouth College, today boasts it's 1st Ivy "to launch AI at an institutional scale." It is doing this by partnering--"more than a collaboration"--with Anthropic, a company that stole the books of many faculty, me included, which many of us are suing.

I got curious if Waymo pays the city they operate in. Found this instead bit.ly/4iEBRvV. If I'm reading this correctly, we'd only be charging them $0.50 per RIDE (not mile). So this seems almost entirely extractive: we pay them $20 for a ride, they pay the city $0.50, and that money leaves Baltimore

I say this with due acknowledgement that she at least knows the Packingham case, which was before her time on the Court. But I'm deeply worried about what she, Sotomayor, and maybe even Kagan will do on this Cox v. Sony case.

And how much it will mess up.

This seems like a, so far, very underreported story! Kudos to Dael. This seems not only big, but a perfect analogy to the whole Republican grifter scheme
A very sharp analysis of the DE state GOP's finances, as detailed in its FEC filing.

A couple of details that jump out (thread)

-the party has been v. successful fundraising by acting as a pass-through entity for a Trump super PAC +
"Delaware’s long-struggling Republican Party faces a money problem just as it approaches a consequential midterm election year.

The state party reported last month that its federal bank account held a balance of negative $3,819 – the fourth month in a row it sat in the red. "

FWIW, this is a solid summation, and better description, of my opinion on the whole "AI" clusterfuck.
It is amazing for handling automation with gross edge cases, fast triage of heterogeneous data, and agents automating APIs are going to accelerate a few workflows by 5x or 50x… but those are mostly not going to be consumer-facing or billable via subscription. No shareholder return, really.

As someone who worked as a student in the university call center trying to raise money our system has a field for "reason for refusal". I strongly encourage any NU or other alums to clearly state this as the reason for not giving when you get called.
BREAKING: Northwestern University has agreed to pay the U.S. Treasury $75 million, over the course of three years as part of an agreement with the federal government to restore funding and end investigations into the university

I thought this was hilarious.
But then saw the hump on the second moose shift oddly when the car was being moved. Then read comments and saw closeup of the car, no actual text on back or above 'Police' on the door.
I HATE that AI can be this good, AND it'll call into question real footage. Ugh

So he'll rant about it and eventually insist we mandate American Numbers?

I may be old but I'll tell ya, an elitist dork like this telling me to 'dress better' at an *airport* of all things...well, just makes me want to show up in PJs all the more.
I mean, already do fairly decent comfy clothes anyway but willing to go full sweats/PJs to counter such ridiculousness.
Sean Duffy: "Dressing with respect -- whether it's a pair of jeans and a decent shirt, I would encourage people to maybe dress a little better which encourages us to maybe behave a little better. Let's try not to wear slippers and pajamas as we come to the airport."
