Hi there, I’m Jana. I loved the very old days of twitter but in recent years have backed into a hedge like Homer Simpson. This site feels like how it used to be. I do voice work, I make music, and currently I’m doing postgrad research at Birkbeck on memory and the landscape of East Anglia. 👋
With the whole “going over the falls in a barrel” aspect of AI saturation, I found Ryan Holiday’s thoughts useful, reassuring and important. ryanholiday.medium.com/youre-gonna-...

I go. I try. And I will keep trying, even though it feels like a losing battle. Because I remember the whole point of the far-right astroturfing of social media is to make it feel like a losing battle, to make us give up.

Anyway, a few snippets on small boat crossings and immigration.

When I think about the stupid mistakes LLMs make with words sometimes, (cf. the strawberry problem, fabricating quotations, or mixing up terms etc.), there's a well-known Old English riddle that comes to mind.

It's more than 1,000 years old but I think it has something to tell us about AI...

About ten years ago I was staying at a friend’s parents’ house and asked if they had any marmite. “I think somewhere…” Found a half used jar at the back of the cupboard next to a tin of peas from 1987. (I went marmiteless)
At the back of your kitchen cupboard is something pickled or preserved in a jar that you were given for Christmas several years ago that you’ve never quite felt like eating.

Throw it out now.

I will be throwing petals in his path.
I’m off to Leeds on Friday and Liverpool on Saturday and Brighton on Tuesday and London on Wednesday and Milton Keynes next Thursday. Why? Because I will be pressing keys on a keyboard with Sweet Billy Pilgrim. Why am I saying this? Because I’d like it to be known.

🧵 I argue that we can understand the functioning of democracy through 3 core ideals, verification, deliberation and accountability. While no democracy fully achieves those ideals, this thread explains how MAGA destroys all three and inevitably results in democratic regression into authoritarianism.
The conditions that have led to what’s happening in the US today exist in democracies around the world.
They are an inevitable outcome of our collective failure to adapt to fundamental changes in the information ecosystem on which our democracies were originally built.

I’d expected that since we’d hit our stretch goal for Lovecraft Investigations that things might quieten down but we’re now at almost £108,000 with 11 days to go. It’s not impossible that we might get to our super-stretch goal of £150k. Shall we give it a go?

I thought all movies started off in colour and turned black and white with age.

Also, I thought tangles in hair were ‘triangles’ and pictured hundreds of tiny triangles as my hair was being brushed.
