Of course, the main takeaway is that decoding skills benefit greatly from rich, varied, & challenging texts if they're sufficiently scaffolded. Levelled readers alone are insufficient to really push & develop students' decoding skills & prosody plays an important (central?) role.

An interesting paper on a protocol for developing reading (decoding) fluency: ila.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... #OpenAccess

I guess this underlines just how specific learning tends to be; "Memory is the residue of thought." - Daniel Willingham

i.e. We remember what we think about.

The lack of focus on meaning may account for the relatively weak vocabulary learning vs. strong reading (decoding) fluency.

In other words, the gains were "mechanical."

Processing for deeper meaning contributes strongly to more durable learning.

As the authors mention, they need to integrate comprehension into the "sounding out" routine... easier said than done!

Essentially, practice at decoding & sounding out words, phrases, & patterns but no comprehension requirement. A “surface feature only” strategy. Incidental interpretation for meaning will more than likely tend towards discreet facts & ideas rather than deeper, more connected & complex meaning.

Thoughts about current #ELT #InstructionalDesign practices.

How far would you agree or disagree?
matbury.bsky.social
Absolutely! Back in the late 1990s, John Truscott kicked off a debate on low efficacy of explicit form focused corrective feedback on students' writing & speaking. Even though the lit reviews & evidence he presented were incontrovertible, the debate still continues to this day. Nothing has changed!

New meta-analysis finds AI feedback performs about as well as human feedback, but I think this is more to do with how poor human feedback has been is rather than how good AI feedback is. In other words, the bar is quite low here. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

There is a lot of talk about LLMs revolutionizing education. But once you get into it, things are not that trivial.

Here, we summarize the questions that emerge when trying to implement AI Tutors nationwide.

As a highly experienced & well-informed teacher, I'm fully capable of directing my own professional development & seeking help with that. Some degree of support from employers would, of course, be of great benefit.
