Reprehensible
I missed this in the budget!!

“She announced a further £891m further public money going into what the government contends will be a privately financed solution” for the Lower Thames Crossing - the vast new motorway tunnel linking Essex to Kent. 😫

Just the PFI consultancy is costing £24m!!!!
4/4 Budget unbundled plus where next for walking, wheeling and cycling?

To find out what happened when we met him, read this 👇
In a Costa in east London, we finally put some questions to Andrew Milne
Why is he sending threatening letters? Does he think he’s committed fraud? And will he be paying the money back?

Ever since we started covering Andrew Milne, the solicitor who's been sending letters asking Sheffield leaseholders for thousands of pounds, we've been building up a list of questions.

Unfortunately, he's not been keen to answer them. So we eventually tracked him down to a Costa in east London.

The first person we meet on Past Lives is Nanaya'ila'i, an Elamite woman from southwestern Iran who was enslaved around 645 BC by the Assyrians in one of their last campaigns of conquest. What can we know about her life? How did she experience the sharp end of empire? www.patreon.com/posts/nanaya...

Among other issues with Zipcar's model in London: Having to negotiate individually with 32 boroughs, some of which charged thousands of pounds per car. Meanwhile, Croydon council outsourced much of their employee car fleet to Zipcar and may be a bit screwed. www.londoncentric.media/p/zipcar-lon...
Why Zipcar gave up on London
The car-sharing scheme was hit by rapidly increased costs, a new congestion charge, and a lack of support from councils.

A: where can I get that hat?
B: where is the spatio-temporal transporter to take me to this place with my bicycle?

Popular in the mountainous regions of Japan and France the 1970s, "pass hunting" involved riding or carrying your bike over mountain passes.

One of the things I love about this chart is that as one of the editors of the site there'll be loads I am not familiar with here – praise be to all our writers for introducing us to so much excellent music, and to our subscribers for funding this.
Thanks for the great reception to our AOTY Chart - have you found any new favourites?

The artificial island where The Bridge becomes The Tunnel is named Peberholm, to complement the preexisting island of Saltholm, which lies next door.

Just as I have smoothed this lump of jet
by turning it over and over in my palm
so many times, until even that too has softened
- what good are speeches now.
My brother has gone, my sister gone
their wild inflections and smiles have gone
- all are gone.

✨ A few years back I stood outside Wells Cathedral for a full day and photographed the impact of the light on the front facade. I was amazed at the outcome - at how a single entity could morph and change under the changing light. 🌅 #thread

This is the Neude in Utrecht. It spent decades in the late 20th century as a car park before being returned to the people and becoming a vibrant public square once again. Your city could do this too - it’s a political choice.

Just to say something about the process…I’ve had these tapes for years but made new recordings, mastered them in audacity to get them sounding as nice as I could, then fed them into some free vocal removal software, where I was able to crudely separate them into drums/voice/ghaita files.
