Yep, same for Cypriots: I have always referred to my mum's and dad's cousins as Uncles and Aunties; and my kids do the same with my and my partner's cousins. None of this 'once removed': they're relatives, not cysts.
Wait, are people really upset that Mamdani spoke about his “aunt,” and it was actually his father’s cousin and not his father’s sibling?

Because that is an extremely normal thing a lot of cultures do. Including a lot of large Jewish families!
In a bit of a tense moment, one of the La Mega co-hosts presses Mamdani on why he "lied" about his "aunt" having been scared to ride the subway after 9/11 while wearing a hijab.

Mamdani says it was "not a lie" because he refers to his father's cousin as his "aunt."

We filled a complaint against Ireland to the European Commission today.
Ireland has appointed an ex-Meta lobbyist as its new Data Protection Commissioner.
This will be interpreted by the tech industry as a signal of impunity.
The European Commission must intervene.

Connolly spoke of her support for the marginalised, her opposition to genocide in Gaza & its enablers and her defence of Irish neutrality, which she saw as being undermined by growing militarisation in the EU.

Fluency in Irish also proved an asset to a generation confident in their Irish identity.

Since the Gaza ceasefire, Israel has intensified its operations against Palestinians in the West Bank, conducting military raids in the north and increasing settler attacks on Palestinians harvesting olive groves.

Refusing to feed people while building a massive ballroom is a fast track to eat the rich. No pun intended.

Not sure there’s anything scarier than the idea of a military with an effectively limitless budget that is no longer bound by the law.

This weird thing in German political discourse where the Govt argues that if they just deport enough people, the crime in urban areas will stop. It’s racist and dishonest, and when you call it out they say it’s neither. Just spend the money on jobs, housing and healthcare, you clowns.

What the WaPo has become:

"The White House cannot simply be a museum to the past. Like America, it must evolve with the times to maintain its greatness. Strong leaders reject calcification."

Important to grasp that the Irish media are not accidentally platforming the right.
Catherine Connolly is the most popular president ever.

1. Catherine Connolly: 914,143
2. Michael D. Higgins: 822,566
3. Michael D. Higgins (2011): 701,101

2. Éamon de Valera: 56.3%
3. Michael D. Higgins: 55.8%

So much talk about spoiled votes, but virtually zero about the 900,000+ Irish citizens who voted for Connolly and the 15,000 volunteers who campaigned for her - nothing about what they want and represent and hope for.
No, Irish media and politics insist you engage with those who can't be bothered.

Saying that it's "too hard" to get on the Irish president ballot when an independent woman got the entire Irish left to back her, got the biggest vote ever and beat two historically dominant parties is not just wrong - it is breathtakingly offensive and outrageously dishonest.

The donated vehicle has been held at Israel’s Port of Ashdod for 15 months despite having clearance documents. Israeli authorities have imposed over $21,000 in storage fees, prompting the firefighters who campaigned for its release to consider bringing it back to the UK after talks with the govt.

Pearse Doherty TD “has never seen an election where a candidate is polling just over 80% of the vote".

Catherine Connolly has "captured the minds and hearts" of people in Donegal.

"It's a phenomenal result here in Donegal.”

Consider how few anecdotes it took for the media to declare a Free Speech on Campus crisis.

Every day we get more evidence that the Republican Party is teeming with white supremacists yet elite institutions refuse to frame this as a crisis that needs the nation’s attention.
