I made LOTH-BISCUITS IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY because these critters are from my one of my most favourite star warses (REBELS) and also because they're great at completely ruining a stormtrooper's day.
A small (coffee-cup-size) sculpture of an star wars cat creature kneading the fur of a snoozing wolf creature both from the Star Wars world of Lothal. The white Loth-wolf is curled up into a sleepy doughnut with its floofy tail over its nose. Loth-cat is doing a Big Stretch. The cat has a goofy ball of a head with two conical ears, skinny stick legs, and its puffy tail stands straight up with happiness. The same sculpture as in the previous image turned to the left to better show the Loth-cat's Big Stretch and happy tail. The Loth-cat's eyes are closed and its wide mouth is in a beatific smile. The wolf's eye is closed and its paw is curled under its jowl. The wolf has patterned lines of raised leathery strips like pieces of corduroy on its paw and snout behind the nose, and little knobby plates near the tips of its ears. Loth-cat and Loth-wolf are on top of a dome-shaped rock surrounded by grasses. The rock is painted to look like it is glowing under the wolf as if touched by the light of a setting sun. The same sculpture as the previous, turned to the right to reveal that the Loth-wolf is gazing up at the Loth-cat with one burning bright eye. The wolf has a line of raised, chevron-shaped plates running down the lower spine, widening into more of a hexagon shape at the wolf's hips, then narrowing and getting smaller and more square towards the tail. The cat is marked with softly geometric stripes and spots that distantly echo the wolf's back plates.

greetings from the centre of the universe
Tl’kemtsin/Lytton ofc
View up a dry mountainous valley where two big rivers join, the milky grey-green Fraser curving in from the top (north) and the clear dark green Thompson flowing from the right (east). Where the rivers meet, they flow together to the left (south) but the waters keep their own colour with a crisp seam between.

rivers don't choose their names, white men do
#landback
A digitally altered sign in stereotypical roadside heritage dark green and cream painted cast iron on a wooden post.
It's titled THE MYTH MAKERS and reads “David Thompson never saw the river system that now bears his name. Simon Fraser travelled his eponymous river just once, thinking it was the Columbia. In acts of hubris amd convenience, the two men named these rivers after each other, then left the west behind. Unsanctioned and hollow, this renaming erased millennia of Indigenous relationships with these waters and rewrote history for the settler conscience.”

Detail from a silhouette drawing in black ink of a squirrel clambering up part of a broken branch on the grass, the head of a hen just making it into the crop behind it.

I was never going to guess that the blob in the sketch was a squirrel 😆

Hey #yyc! If you can't get to the polls on election day, you can PICK UP a ballot from Elections Calgary anytime until Oct. 20, & bring it back. You have to request your ballot here:
sb.calgaryelections.ca
I wrote a comic about this for @sprawlcalgary.bsky.social. But I have some more thoughts. 1/7
A black & white comic strip on a bright green background telling the story of how I found out that I could pick up a ballot from Elections Calgary, so my mom could vote at her continuing care residence... but I was confused that this was called a "mail-in ballot." There is no mail involved!

One more note. To pick up a ballot, you need a signed authorization from the person you're picking up for, saying that they're letting you pick up the ballot. & when you request the ballot online, you must give their address, to confirm they're on the voter list.
Ok, end of rant, happy voting! 7/7

You’d think that in an election that bodes extremely low turnout, Elections Calgary might want to... TELL PEOPLE it's possible to pick up a ballot? Anytime up until election day, at a fairly central location (1212 31 Ave NE)? Maybe folks could benefit from that info? Ok, my rant's almost done. 6/7
calgaryhester.bsky.social
But here’s the weird part. On the Elections Calgary site, this helpful service is referred to as a "Mail-In Ballot," or “Special (Mail-in) Ballot package" (see my screenshots). How is anyone supposed to learn that a pick-up option is available? There's no mention of it! 5/7

August 2026. Massive heatwaves kill 1000s of Americans, mostly low-income and elderly, because as a society we decided it was more important to be able to create pervy deepfake videos of the girl next door than to power air conditioners.

I am being asked to tell my department which pieces of lab equipment should be supported with backup power because they expect rolling blackouts and brownouts in 2026 due to increased energy demands from AI. In case you're wondering how my day is going.

How W. E. B. Du Bois responded to government policing of "anti-American" sentiment during the 1910s:

"I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, 'We are seeking to have the Constitution of the United States thoroughly and completely enforced.' ”
Federal agents invaded even the offices of The Crisis and the National Association for the advancement of colored people and asked searching questions: " just what, after all, were our objects and activities?” I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, “We are seeking to have the constitution of the United states thoroughly and completely enforced.” It took some ingenuity, even for Southerners, to make treason out of that.

Bonus early PhD Alex for scale.
