📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

White people who have spent decades thinking “Born in the USA” is patriotic and “Every Breath You Take” is a great wedding song are suddenly very concerned about not being able to understand lyrics to some songs at the Super Bowl halftime show.

Seems a little crazy that all of these AI chip and datacenter deals are being sized by the power they consume. While the transparency is interesting, it feels like "I'm going to use 6 billion watts to allow people to create fake videos" is a little too direct for people to get behind these things.

If you'd asked me which celebrity would posthumously unveil a list of people she wanted fired into the sun, I would not have guessed Jane Goodall
Dr. Jane Goodall filmed an interview with Netflix in March 2025 that she understood would only be released after her death.

Good overview from 1945 on how to recognize fascism.
In March of 1945, the US Army issued this "fact sheet" to guide conversations with soldiers on the topic of fascism, paying particular attention to the ongoing threat that domestic fascist movements posed to the US. Their analysis of what a homegrown US fascism would look like is interesting.

I think Pope Leo contributes necessary nuance to the conversation.

However, I keep seeing (well meaning) people defend (bad faith) rebuttals to his comments by saying that “Jesus stopped a death penalty” in John 8 and… that is not what happened.

Walk with me real quick. 1/13
Pope Leo XIV: “Someone who says I'm against abortion but I'm in favor of the death penalty is not really pro-life”

It seems like for a lot of people who call themselves Christians online, the things that they pejoratively label as “progressive” or “woke” are simply anything that looks like the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, & self-control of Jesus.

When you try to predict about the impact of AI tools on software engineering - a great analogy I heard from @simonwillison.net is to look at the impact of smartphones (+ the amazing cameras they have) on filmmaking.

Noticed that those able to shoot pro films using a smartphone are... pros?

Breaking up monopolies to reduce prices
Free Healthcare
UBI
A broader social safety net
Rebuilding the commerce Trump destroyed

Florida Man at it again.

I guess we should start staying away from Florida.

And if you are antivax, I suggest you just move there and stop taking advantage of the herd immunity that the rest of us provide.

The rest of us would like to live without preventable disease.

This is a good explanation of AI coding. And it starts to define one reason why people may like or dislike it.
Coding with AI feels like teaching. You still need to learn before you can teach. Deep understanding of the domain and software quality still matters. But not everyone who enjoys coding will enjoy instructing a machine. It’s a different kind of creativity.

Definition of a small town: I just walked past and waved at a girl who is probably 5 years old trying to catch a cat in an Amazon box at the local grain mill. And just smiled and thought how funny it would be if she caught a cat.

It’s so frustrating that there is this illusion that we are all 49%/49% right now. Us versus them, good versus bad, and it’s all because of the BS that is the electoral system. It’s very likely 70% versus 30% and we’re just not seeing representative government. There’s just no common sense right now
