Cole’s point here is important, but I do think there’s absolutely a world where the sort of board games he’s talking about CAN be in conversation with each other at that pace. It’s already happening with trick takers. People are constantly innovating, futzing, and publishing rulesets online 🧵

The sorts of games I work on take years, at minimum. Their participation in a critical conversation will always have a vastly different character than the kinds of back and forth you see in TTRPG zines and ashcans.

I learned of this song from this banger of a comic edit someone made.

JESUS CHRIST. GO OUTSIDE. TALK TO A REAL PERSON.

It’s a weird looking thing. There’s some aspects that I do kinda love; indexing the smaller version of the number to the top right makes it so you only stack the cards in descending order and the numbers getting fuzzier as they get bigger is a fun touch. But, man, those colors are a choice.

Now that's a good mail day! Two incredible subjects with equally remarkable productions. I can't wait to get these on the table.

Interesting! Yeah, well-intentioned is probably the charitable way to describe how I felt about the whole Word for Word thing after I looked into it. Nothing about it seemed sinister, but as someone who grew up around that kind of media, I don’t think that sort of strict retelling holds much draw.

But, like, as an object/text, it makes almost more interesting. Basically the difference between watching something like The Last Temptation of Christ or Silence and going back to watch/listen to Adventures in Odyssey.

Of all the critics, I’m glad you’re taking on The Great Commission. I’m deeply uncertain on how to feel about it. The company behind it seems like it has a clear evangelical mission (in the traditional sense, not the politics label sense) which makes the whole thing uninteresting to me artistically.

I’d say Mysterium Kids. The Mysterium system is pretty rock solid.

I don’t always agree with what fuels Jeff Gerstmann’s indignant rage, but I always respect it. (Though I absolutely agreed with it in this clip).

As a bit of an outsider, this is kinda how I felt about people complaining that the map/board for the Blood Rage sequel was gonna be in the form of a house layout.

My picks are Laura Marling, Jason Isbell (at least on Southeastern and Something More Than Free, I feel like he’s regressed a bit since then), Joni Mitchell, James McMurtry, Kendrick Lamar, Open Mike Eagle, Paul Simon, and Joan Armatrading.

I also need to know: I am fairly middle-of-the-road on Taylor Swift but someone I know called her the Greatest Living Lyricist. She is not.

Who is yours? Either the greatest or your favorite?

The fact that the standardized college entrance exam y’all defaulted to referencing was the ACT instead of the SAT is the equivalent to waving a flag that says “hey, we’re midwesterners!”

This is a fascinating review for a lot of reasons, but I think the most fascinating part for me is how it reveals just how different of approaches and opinions two folks whose output you respect can have. It’s so clear here how different Jamey and Efka’s views on the ideal form for games are.

So much of what holds him back from reaching the artistic heights of a lot of his contemporaries is that he just sort of comes off like an idiot, in his lyrics and his statements like this.

Like, compare this to the statement Tyler Childers put out alongside Long Violent History.
luke6080.bsky.social
Read this statement, and then read the one that Tyler Childers put out alongside Long Violent History and try and tell me they’re in the same league.

I think the thing that’s always sort of repelled me from Zach Bryan (in spite of me liking a lot of country and Americana music) is that he just kind of comes off like an idiot, even in his songs. So many of his contemporaries (Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, etc.) are sharp songwriters. He’s not

honestly if I have to pin down my apathy toward sell sheets, it's because making art & selling it are different skills and I resent how often they're expected to be bundled together - I resent any trend which *demands* the artist also be conversant in sales & advertising to get published

I like the term "trunk or treat" because it implies that some percentage of kids are getting tossed into trunks for daring to ask for candy.

Absolutely wild that they haven’t lost a step in their nearly 15 years of not playing together. They’ve still got it.

The one good thing NFTs did was prove that you can't just want something to work so badly that it succeeds. Yes, this is about ai.

I’m so psyched for Origin Story. It’s such a left turn for Stonemaier, but I’m glad they’re taking a swing on something of that size and scope. And @petewiss.bsky.social knows his shit when it comes to trick taking.

I’ve been cranking out games of Tag Team on BGA for like two weeks now. Really dig it.

Finally got around to playing my copy of Magical Athlete, which was just as much of a goof fest as I hoped.

I’ve been noodling on an idea all day and I have no idea if it’s totally bunk or not, so I’m just going to throw it out there:

The modern euro space is an outgrowth of cross pollination with video games; above the table play is deemphasized to make way for play that centers mechanical mastery.
