Just some thoughts about my good ol bud Emet-Selch :)

You'll forgive me for not wanting to bother fighting the character limit on this one
Some Reasons Why I Think Emet-Selch is Neat :) (This is a mess of jumbled thoughts. Please forgive me if all this is absolutely steeped in headcanons, I have many thoughts and no one to share them with 😬) Emet’s sass is probably my favorite thing about him? He’s so foppish, so showy. Theatre kid to the point of not even being a theatre kid anymore, but something even further beyond (the entire theatre itself). It’s so funny to see how reserved Emet was back in the days of Paradise, he wants so bad to be taken seriously XD But he still has that flair for the dramatic, even back then!! It’s just a lil more hidden under the surface. I would love to know if he was always as much of a theatre fan as he is in the present, or if that was something he picked up an appreciation for after years and years of playing different parts in service to the Rejoining. I find it so fascinating that Emet is this all-powerful, immortal being that has lived for thousands upon thousands of years, and his ability to manipulate aether is extraordinary, even among his peers—but then we, the viewer, never see him really use it until the very end of Shadowbringers. He makes mention of how he can just kill all the Scions so easily multiple times, and you believe him for sure—he’s not lying—yet he makes no show of it. You get a lil taste of his abilities when he rescues Y’shtola from the Lifestream, something that up until this point only the Elementals had the power to do (and he was even generous enough to clothe her afterwards which I will never NOT find funny), and you get a taste with the way he can manipulate the Ocular with ease. But he doesn’t bring his powers to bear against WoL and the Scions until the end, with his one-to-one recreation of Amaurot and the Final Days, and his final battle. I suppose you can argue that he was staying his hand as a show of good will towards the Scions, but even after the pretense is gone, he still opts for Gun in order to subdue the Exarch. I don’t know, it’s probably not that deep, but I think it’s just such an interesting decision for Emet to not showcase his arcane abilities. He’s not really a boaster, either? He acknowledges his magicks as just “something he can do”, even during the days of Eld. The differences between Emet of Eld and Emet of Today are so staggering. My guy really went from Tired Government Worker being lovingly teased by his friends to humanity’s final remnant of the past, fighting tooth and nail to preserve it. He was one of Etheirys’s last remaining survivors and sole hope of not only resurrecting what once was, but remembering it at all. He’ll stop at literally nothing to bring back his friends and family, even at the cost of everything he once valued. He was a genuinely kind and helpful person back in the day, according to Hythlodaeus. He loved the people of Etheirys just as much as Venat did, wanted to help them as much as Venat did—but their own experiences caused their approaches of “helping the people at the end of everything” to differ. We only know so much about the intricacies of the decision to bring about Zodiark, but Emet’s choice to support that course of action costed him all of his dearest friends in one way or another: Hyth sacrificed, Venat becoming the vessel to fight against what Emet and others have brought into existence, and Azem’s office being slashed from record and Azem themself becoming sundered. And still, Emet holds fast to his choice being the correct course of action—possibly being even the only course of action. And even when faced with evidence that he will lose everything and turn into this horrible monster and shell of his former self, it’s so out-of-line with how Emet views himself that he flat out doesn’t believe it, and is insulted that WoL would ever even suggest that he’d disrespect the memories of his fallen loved ones like that. He can’t believe that the overwhelming love he bears for his friends, his people, his world would become the thing that ultimately destroys him. But it is apparent to those around him, or at least to Hythlodaeus. Nobody stood up for Emet during that scene like “Yeah, how dare you insinuate something like that about our good friend Emet, he would never do such a thing!”, but we did tell Hyth the same story while on the moon, and he just flat-out went “Haha yeah he would do that.” His friends know just how sentimental Emet is, probably even moreso than him simply because they’re used to dealing with how tsundere he is. And on the topic of the days of Eld, that part where Emet sees Hermes absolutely wrecked over having to wipe a dangerous creature completely from existence + the previous Fandaniel returning to the star, and being like “Lol I don’t get why he’s so upset. Sure it’s a little sad to see ‘em go, but why would it cause him so much grief?” LIKEEEEEEEE he is so deeply ingrained within the culture of this perfect paradise that he literally cannot even fathom the concept of even a death affecting you and haunting you for the rest of your life, let alone the deaths of your entire society and world. That’s just!!!!! Oughhh…… And then being one of three of the only remaining survivors of the planet while everyone else got killed, reduced to aether to fuel a god who later got sentenced to Moon Prison for eternity, or reduced to ants is just so!!!! o;gaigenrgioghghhghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ow ow ow wo wowoowoow owoww And can I talk about the fact that after the Sundering, Emet legitimately tried to connect with the sundered?? Multiple, multiple times??? He’s lived among sundered beings as one of them, in lifetimes upon lifetimes. Broken bread, fought, grown ill, grown old, all that jazz. And throughout history, he’s taken on different identities to manipulate masses into endless conflicts and wars. But among those lifetimes, he’s surely taken some lifetimes just to experience what sundered life had to offer. He’s had to play every role in existence, every identity there could ever be, there is not a skill or interest in existence he has not dabbled in a hundred times over. Every lived experience, the overwhelmingly joyous and good, and the impossibly, horrifically bad, Emet has surely lived through. And not only did he live countless mortal lives, he also traveled the Source and the reflections too. Traveling was much more Azem’s thing than it was, his, and Emet missed them so much he tried to connect with their interest/work. Eternity’s a long damn time, and longer still is his own self-imposed Great Work. But Emet took the time alongside his duties to experience the world as Azem did—live among the people, learn about them and how they lived, try to see what Azem saw in them. He tried to see the world in Azem’s point of view and figure out why they not support the sacrifice to Zodiark. Emet wanted to give the sundered beings a chance, and he did so multiple, multiple times. But they just weren’t the same. They weren’t his friends. They weren’t his loved ones. They lived, bred, fought, and died within a blink of an eye, each new generation repeating the same mistakes at the previous, and never learning. And with his own experiences, and the long, lonely life he has been forced to lead, how could Emet ever truly connect in a meaningful way? He’s so completely sick with nostalgia that he just can’t even fathom moving forward and letting go.

My heart is warmed to see individuals, small businesses, and nonprofits in my area who mobilized, organized, and activated to help ensure community members are able to feed themselves and family this month, but I'm equally furious that it has to be this way when the means exist already for the govt

I don’t know how we’ve gotten to the point where men in full balaclavas can abduct daycare teachers while they’re watching children.

But I do know that this isn’t sustainable. Abolish ICE. There is no way to reform this.
