A few words I wrote about Black Messiah shortly after it was released (back when I wrote for a website that’s been offline for years now) that hit me even harder now knowing that this is the last album D’Angelo put out while he was alive. RIP to a beautiful soul who was taken from us way too soon 😢

After fourteen long years stowed away in solitude, D'Angelo emerged from his refuge as something greater than a prophet. He transformed into a messiah, now ready and able to liberate his people from the subjugation of modern civilization and deliver them into supreme serenity. With the support of fellow Soulquarians Q-Tip and Questlove, bassist Pino Palladino, drummer James Gadson, and songwriter Kendra Foster, D'Angelo harnessed his divine powers and created a sacred portal that will bring all of his acolytes into salvation. D'Angelo proves that he is prepared to sacrifice himself for the cause, declaring on "1000 Deaths" "I was born to kill, send me over the hill." He asserts on "The Charade" that the promised progress on Earth has not happened and never will, and so you must hold out for the type of love found in the higher realm, a love described on "Sugah Daddy" and "Really Love" that satiates all of your physical and spiritual desires. This guiding light radiates from inside D'Angelo, and he vows that he will never "Betray His Heart" and abandon those that mean so much to him. He concludes the album by elevating out of this wicked world and drifting off into "Another Life", pleased with the fact that we will soon be able to join him in this majestic bliss.

And I’ll say that this is the maybe the most likable group of players the Knicks have had in my ~25 years of fandom, some of whom were apparently close enough with a trans woman for this to happen, and they now have a real chance to step up and be allies and enact a positive change. I hope they do.

I’ll still be rooting for the Knicks because I’m a NY hooper who loves the game and these players, and sports teams are always much bigger than their owners. The Knicks were New York’s before JD was born and will likely be after he’s dead, plus most of these billionaire owners are roughly as awful

I’ve long avoided spending any money on the Knicks that would directly enrich their ownership. I’ve been to four games at MSG in my life and never bought any of those tickets myself. Even most of the team gear I have has been bought secondhand. If this BS isn’t addressed, that’ll definitely continue

Sadly I’m not shocked at this behavior from the Knicks higher-ups (this isn’t even the worst thing they’ve done to a woman in my time as a fan, look up Anucha Browne Sanders) but if we let stuff like this slide with no scrutiny it’ll keep getting worse. Don’t let these dirtbags treat us like this.

As both a trans woman and lifelong Knicks fan, I have to say that this is really fucked up 😡 Hoping to see the media dive deeper into this story and ask the players about it, and hope the players loudly stick up for their friend being discriminated against and take the organization to task about it
