I think one challenge is that people may equate psychological states with chosen states. That is the even deeper issue, that many hold the belief that happiness and wellbeing are always 100% chosen. Even healing that we can choose takes time... and recurring stressors make that doubly hard.

I agree 100% that we have self healing power, and I've spent decades trying to tap into that. I've noticed that psychological stress worsens my symptoms. But someone I just met implying that I'm sick on purpose is just... exhausting. I like this person. They meant well, but it put me on the defense.

The thing I find most depressing about 2025 is not that fascism is rising... It's that there are so many men willing to raid their neighbor's homes or ziptie children or slam pregnant women to the ground to make fascism possible. That's not angry disenfranchisement. It's just sadism.

But surviving while stuck takes an insane level of perseverance, bravery, and skill. It's a feat in itself. If you're stuck and surviving, you're not losing. You're doing what you have to do to keep going. Respect!

🧵 We glorify the act of leaving an abusive situation and making a new life. That's the respectable outcome. Even when people understand how a woman can be stuck in a cycle of violence, there's still an underlying sense of dismay or disapproval. Like it's a shame or embarrassment to be stuck. 1/2
