Love this picture to represent this movement!
It's been a hot minute, but I wrote a new picture book! My messy first draft with an unexpected monster vs. a firm, boundry-setting MC was sent to CP for their thoughts. 🎉

After splitting with my agent this year, I've only written 1 other MS. Felt good to get writing again.

I know this is an old thought, but I came across this brilliant Octavia Butler poem again today, and I felt a fresh wave of grief that our president and his staff are cowards, fools, thieves, liars, AND tyrants, and what their awfulness is doing to us in turn.
I'm just a previously agented author, standing with a megaphone to remind querying authors to vet both an agent AND their AGENCY. Trust me. Just because an agent gives positive vibes isn't enough. I learned the hard way.

If you have even one red flag, I'd say stay away.

Pressed "send" on a picture book MS I love to an editor I'd love to work with, so of course I am questioning all of my word choices, periods, and commas.

Anyone else overanalyze their books after sending them off?

Found this helpful post by the wonderful @debbieohi.com! Especially for any author getting ready to submit directly to an editor, it can be helpful to find out their preferences for pagination.
Thanks Debbie for putting this together!

You know a book has to be good when the toddler stops his destruction of CandyLand to check it out.

Querying too soon = like entering a baking contest with raw dough. You’ll leave with a mess and a sudden desire to throw your laptop into a lake. I wrote the checklist you actually need 👉 buff.ly/uBvGZMt

My daughter had a party today and wanted to take a book "in case they play something I don't want to."

Love her love of reading, but...

This is the book she wanted to bring. If you have a magic-loving, baker middle grader, this has her reading past lights out.

I spent the summer reporting this essay on why it seems harder than ever to sell a book right now—especially if it isn't a debut and comes with the dreaded "sales track." I'm grateful to the writers, agents, editors, publishers & experts who spoke to me for this piece: thewalrus.ca/the-publishi...
